Raja, one of the regulars of this blog needs no introduction. An enthusiastic blogger, who recently organised a get together of the regulars of this blog at his residence in Bangalore is a great fan of public tarnsport and he misses no opportunity on availing public transport. He fondly remembers his stay in New Delhi three decades ago when there used to be double decker buses in Delhi. Raja loved to ride on the upper deck and would love the feeling of being on top of the world.

The bus conductors on the other hand wanted commuters to remain on the bottom deck so that his workload was reduced.

Raja is no longer in Delhi and even double decker buses are no longer there in Delhi.

A few days back, Raja boarded a city bus (normal singer storied one) in Bangalore. Here are Raja’s experiences on that bus in his own words:

So there was this sweet lady conductor today in the bus. Asked me “Uncle, yelli? (kidhar?)

I told her, she gave me a ticket.

Then another guy got into the bus. A much older guy than me. She asked him “Anna, yelli? (Anna = elder brother).

Now, I’ve been called Uncle many times – and I don’t mind it at all – but ye kahaan ka logic hai? Humko Uncle aur usko Anna? :)

Raja’s friends expressed their sympathies telling him that it was the kamaal of his “Safed baal”.

“Haan, wohi hoga. I have even been called “Dadaji”..and that, already 15 years ago! :)”- Raja stated.

Then people offered some other theories, viz. the other guy could well be younger than Raja, or may be the bus conductor actually called that other guy as “grandfather” (“Anna” being “grandfather” in the bus conductor’s language).

Another explanation offered was ” tum English type lag rahe hoge issliye uncle bola, nahin toh anna toh sabhi ko bol dete hain na? wo aadmi tumse zayada desi lag raha hoga. “

Others jumped in the bandwagon-“haan Raja to poora imported lagta hai!”

And then others told him that getting adressed as Uncle/aunt at this stage was natural and it was in fact a compliment. He was told that “At least in the south, I’ve noticed that people who look well-dressed, a bit westernised, educated and/or well-groomed are addressed as uncle or aunty. It has got only slightly do with age. What earlier was Sir (pronounced Sar) in Karnataka has become uncle and for women, aunty.
So, take it as a compliment Raja!
I’m glad to see that there are lady conductors in the bus in Bangalore. Good!”

My take on the matter was “Yes, There being lady conductors is Bangalore buses in more interesting news than the news of Raja being addressed as Uncle. :)”

We will never know how Raja would have liked to be addressed by the lady conductor. Maybe Raja would have preferred “jaaneman, yelli?” :)

To bad that it was not a movie, otherwise we could have expected a good song situation under such circumstances. Imagine the lady conductor singing a song like “Yelahanka to Jalahalli dus dus mein, ab raaja aaya hai meri bus mein”, or let us imagine two lady bus conductors comparing notes- “Na koi Teri bus mein Julie, Na koi meri bus mein”. :)

And being a movie, we could expect the two parties to meet again and again and burst into duets at the drop of the hat.

Here is one likely duet song for the occasion. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. Noor Dewasi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Bipin Babul.

The song is picturised on Shyama and Premnath. Name of the movie- “Bus Conductor” of course ! :)
