Phir Aane Laga Yaad Wahi Pyaar Ka Aalam

This, and many other iconic compositions flow through the mind when the name Iqbal Qureshi is mentioned. One of that group of hugely talented music directors who never could break into the so called ‘Legendary Club’, no matter so many of his creations have become legends in as of themselves. Starting with his first film ‘Panchaayat’ from 1958 – the iconic duets “Taa Thaiya Karte Aana, O Jaadugar Morey Sainyyan” (Lata and Geeta) and “Haal Ye Kar Diya Zaalim Tere Tadpaane Ne” (Rafi and Lata), and browsing through musical gems of such films as ‘Bindya’ and ‘Love In Simla’ (both 1960), ‘Umar Qaid’ (1961), ‘Ye Dil Kisko Doon’ (1963), the legendary ‘Cha Cha Cha’ and the lilting ‘Qawwaali Ki Raat’ of 1964, ‘Sarhadi Lutera’ of 1966, on to strumming the songs of the unreleased ‘Pyaar Bana Afsaana’, all the way up to ‘Lakhpati’ of 1991. An era that is dotted with lilting creations of Iqbal Qureshi.

Remembering Iqbal Qurehi on his birth anniversary on 12th May. At 6 feet 4 inches, he was arguably the tallest member of the industry in his time.

He was born in Aurangabad on May 12, 1930, and was brought up in Hyderabad after his family moved there. Iqbal’s musical journey began at an early age. As a child, he performed for All India Radio. In Hyderabad, he used to sing at private gatherings, where he became friends with the famous poet Makhdoom Mohiuddin and actor/director Chandrashekhar. He was also a member of the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA).

In Mumbai, impressed by his singing, Lekhraj Bhakri offered him his first film, ‘Panchayat’ (1958), which was also the debut film of Manoj Kumar. Besides the songs mentioned above, the film has hit numbers like “Aayi Aayi Bahaar Aaj Re, Karke Solah Singaar Aaj Re” by Lata Mangeshkar, and “Teri Yaad Dil Se Piya Jaaye Na” .

In 1960, he was called in by AVM for their film ‘Bindiya’ (1960), starring Balraj Sahni, Padmini, and Jagdeep, which has the Rafi gem “Main Apne Aap Se Ghabra Gaya Hoon”, and the Lata solo “Nasha Saa Chhaa Gaya Sanam Tere Pyaar Ka”. The same year he got his biggest break with S Mukherjee’s Filmalaya.  ‘Love In Simla’ (1960) was a hit and became the launch pad for Joy Mukherjee and Sadhna. The film carried such gems like “Gaal Gulabi Kiske Hain” and ” Yoon Zindagi Ke Raaste Sanwaarte Chale Gaye” sung by Rafi, and “Dar Pe Aaye Hain Qasam Le” in the voice of Mukesh are still remembered fondly.

He went on to give soulful music in films like ‘Umar Qaid’ (1961), which has “Mujhe Raat Din Ye Khayaal Hai” by Mukesh and “O Piya Jaana Naa” in the voice of Asha Bhosle. In 1962 came ‘Banarsi Thug’ which has Rafi’s “Ab Muhabbat Mein Jo Pehle Thi Wo Taaseer Nahin“, and Lata Mangeshkar’s “Yaad Suhaani Teri Bani Zindagaani Meri” and Lata-Mukesh’s duet “Ek Baat Poochhta Hoon Gar Tum Bura Na Maano“. This was followed in 1963 by the film ‘Yeh Dil Kisko Doon’ which is remembered for many hit songs like “Phir Aane Laga Yaad Wahi Pyaar Ka Aalam” by Rafi and Usha Khanna and “Kitni Haseen Ho Tum” by Mohammed Rafi, the Asha-Mubarak Begum duet “Hamen Dum Dai Ke Sautan Ghar Jaana”, and the iconic Rafi-Asha duet “Jab Tak Duniya Rahi, Rahega Tera Naam Mera Naam”.

In 1964 came his most famous work, ‘Cha Cha Cha’ starring Helen and Chandrashekhar. The film features some of Hindi cinema’s most iconic melodies, including Makhdoom Muhiuddin’s classic nazam, “Ek Chameli Ke Mandwe Taley” sung by Mohammad Rafi and Asha Bhosle and the wonderful Mohammad Rafi solos – “Subah Na Aayi, Shaam Na Aayi” and “Woh Hum Na The Wo Tum Na The“. 1964 also saw the release of the film ‘Qawwali Ki Raat’ which carries some of the most famous qawwaalis of all times – “Kehne Waale Tu Bhi Keh Le Jo Dil Ki Baat Hai”, “Husn Waale Husn Ka Anjaam Dekh”, and “Jaate-Jaate Ik Nazar Bhar Dekh Lo”.

His other famous works include the films like ‘Pyar Bana Afsana’ (1966) (UR), ‘Sarhadi Lutera’ (1966), ‘Mohabbat Aur Jung (1967), ‘Do Thug (1970), ‘Dastaan-e-Laila Majnu’ (1974), ‘Sultan-e-Hind‘ (1978), and ‘Alam Ara’ (1973).

He continued to give music till the 1990s, composing for 28 films in all, including a Bhojpuri film ‘Kab Hoihain Gavanva Hamaar’ (1964). He passed away on March 21, 1998, in anonymity in Bombay.

For today’s song, I present this wonderful duet from the 1966 film ‘Sarhadi Lutera’. The words are from the pen of MA Taj and the singing voices are of Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle. Incidentally, this song is not released on 78 rpm gramophone record. But the film is available and the video of the song has been uploaded on YT by Shahid Jaipuri. On screen the song is picturised on Salim Khan (of Salim-Javed fame) and the lesser known actress Sunita.

Hullo Atuldom

Before beginning this post, I googled to check out movies starring Sunil Dutt that has music by Laxmikant- Pyarelal. The reason for this search was to remember Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar (of the L-P duo) who passed away on 25th May 1998 & Sunil Dutt who left this mortal world on the same date in 2005. Like on previous occasions, the first result from Google was the 1967 hit ‘Milan’. Of course that is a movie that has long been YYIIPPEEEEd on the blog.
A hunt through the films starring Sunil Dutt helped me dig out a film that released in 1980.

“Yari Dushmani” (1980) was a movie directed by Sikandar Khanna and produced by Som Dutt for Nandi Arts. It had Reena Roy- Sunil Dutt- Amjad Khan in pivotal roles with Diljeet Kaur, Roopesh Kumar, Nandita Thakur, Bharat Bhushan, Rajendranath, Bhushan Tiwari, Janakidas, Tun Tun, Sunder, Sheikh, Maruti, Lalitha Kumari, Jagdish Raj, Raj Kishore, Keshav Rana, Rajan Haksar, Master Bittu, & Shakti Kapoor (the main antagonist, I think). Asit Sen, Mukri, Shiv Kumar, Dev Kumar, Gulshan Bawra have been credited as ‘Friendly appearance’ in the titles of the film; which I followed to write about the cast. (I think this was one of the first films of Shakti Kapoor).

Laxmikant- Pyarelal were the music directors of songs written by Rajinder Krishan. Mohd Rafi, Manna Dey, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar were the playback singers used.

“Yari Dushmani” was the story of two boys- friends- who grow up on the streets of Bombay (now Mumbai). They indulge in petty activities like cleaning the windshield of cars at traffic signals etc. and also at lifting of minor change, purse etc. from the cars they clean. Their crimes multiply as they grow older, getting bolder every year. When they come to know about a diamond necklace, they plan to steal it together, which they do successfully. But they have a fallout when it comes to sharing the steal. That is how the ‘YARI’ turns to ‘DUSHMANI’.

This was a movie which came at a time when Sunil Dutt was about 50 years old. He looked smart & well maintained in the little that I saw of the film. In fact, he looked great even in his later films whether as father of the heroine in ‘Laila’ (1984) ‘Faasle’ (1985); the royal Rajput Bhavani Singh in ‘Kshatriya’ & ‘Parampara’ (both in 1993, interestingly his name was same in both the films); and his last film appearance which was in ‘Munnabhai M.B.B.S.’ in 2003 when he was 74.

A small bit of info about the producer of this film Som Dutt: he was Sunil Dutt’s brother who was launched by Sunil Dutt in 1968 through ‘Man Ke Meet’ with Vinod Khanna.

Today’s song has Sunil Dutt & Amjad Khan in disguise & Reena Roy is present as a dancer who is entertaining a gathering that has Janakidas & Asit Sen in the audience. This Laxmi-Pyare -Rajinder Krishan song is in the voices of Mohd Rafi & Asha Bhosle.

ik chhalaawa aa hai
har ghadi maut ka
bulaawa aa hai
peene waalon se maut darti hai
raasta chhod kar gujarti hai
rok le gardishen zamaane ki
ye hai ?? sharaabkhaane ki
aaj mat rokiyega peene se
dushmani keejiyegaa jeene se
sharbati aankhon se
wo cheez pilaa de saaqi
loriyaan deke jo mehfil ko
sulaa de saaqi

choom kar jaam
?? gale milta hai
apni kismat ka andhere mein kanwal khilta hai
chalo kar den khaali haan
chalo kar den khaali khaali
chalo kar de khaali haan
chalo kar den khaali kisi ka khazaana
chalo kar den khaali kisi ka khazaana
kahin lootate lootate lut na jaana
sambhal kar haseenon se aankhen ladaana
kahin lootate lootate lut na jaana

The song under discussion is sung by Mohd Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. It is lip-synced on screen by Mehmood and Helen respectively. We can see Mehmood, Helen, Brahmachari, Vinod Mehra,( in ‘disguise’ who seems to be on a ‘secret mission’ looking for a ‘key’ of something, which they finally get). Also seen in the picturisation of this song is Rakesh Pande and many others. This song is a nice hummable song. It grows upon us if we listen to it a few times. I do not remember to have listened to this song in the past.

We are treated to the unique jigs of Mehmood in the picturisation. I have not yet watched this movie. This movie is now available on the online platform, and maybe I would watch it soon :). Meanwhile I would request knowledgeable readers who have watched this movie to throw more light on this movie and its songs.

Let us now enjoy the today’s rocking song and pay our tributes to Pancham Da !!
I do have some more song-posts planned for today… let us see… 🙂

With this song the movie “Ujaalaa Hi Ujaalaa-1974’ makes its debut on the blog today…

(In the future posts on the blog we will be looking into the complete list of movie released in ‘1974’ and their status on the blog. We will keep introducing those ‘missing’ movies of ‘1974’ on the blog whose songs are available online.)

78th Independence day – 15th August, 2024

The nation grows older by one more year on 15th August. And hopefully wiser too. Among the nations formed in 20th century, post world wars scenario, we have indeed come a long way, and hopefully shall grow, by leaps and bounds.

The cultural conflux and amalgamation, is what makes this country what it is, that the world looks up to us for the colourful heritiage, for the values of humanity, for intellectual and literary wealth.

But the fact is also that what was important in 20th century, may not be so relevant in 21st century. We are looking at a vaccum forming in the world power structure. All of us must look after our own interests and also look outward for the sake of survival of the civilization. The climate change and disasters are a reality, and no one can hide from this truth. Wars and killing of innocents, as a casualty of a power tussle, has made the last century quite painful for societies around the world. And people are learning and taking note of the atrocities. While tussle for power will be a point of contention, it may not necessarily mean that nations have to go to physical wars. So, the world is learning and de-learning the tactics of warfare, which may reduce dependence on the arms and weapons.

Our survival depends on mutual co-operation with greater sharing of information and technology among ourselves. I have read somewhere that the mobile phone technology / internet communication was already available to some and they were using it for superiority at war times, much earlier than it became available to public. For all the advantage, it gave to some nations over others, the relevance and advantages have all gone by now, in less than a century. So, the times are changing and change is happening faster than it happened in 20th century.

I came across a few “Asha’ar” being shared by different people, on a whatsapp group, in some discussion. “charaagh” and ‘hawaa’ were the words, which are the common link between them. I am sharing a few here :

1. Kitna mushkil hai jalaana kisi raste mein charaagh
Kitna aasaan hai hawaaon ko ishaara karna

2. Main ne yeh jaan kar hi jalaya thha ek charaagh
Ab jo bhi aayegaa wo hawaa le ke aayega

3. Agarche zor hawaaon ne daal rakkha hai
Magar charaagh ne lau ko sambhaal rakkha hai

4. In charaaghon mein tel hi kam thha
Kyun gila phir hamen hawaa se rahe

5. Jab tak mai ek charaagh jalaaun na raah mein
Tab tak yeh daur mujh ko hawaa se daraaye ga

6. Meri zindagi ka maqsad ke sabhi ko faiz pahunche
Main charaagh-e-reh guzar hoon mujhe shauq se jalaao

7. Kaun taakon pe raha kaun sar-e-rehguzar
Shehar ke saare charaaghon ko hawaa jaanti hai

In another context, I am recalling the remarkable poetry and scene it creates in this shair:

Aabla paa koyi iss dasht mein aaya hogaa
Warna aandhi mein diya kis ne jalaaya hogaa

(Link)

A “Charaagh” in the poetic sense is the source of light, substance, or the guidance. The function of ‘Charaagh’ is to put light on a matter, i.e. “roshni daalna”. To make it ‘ujaagar’, Ayaan or to reveal the matter. That is not the destination;

Guzar jaa aql se aage ke yeh noor
Charaagh e raah hai, manzil nahin hai

So charaagh, lamp or diya is the means to an end.

We all know that India is known as a sane nation, not taking war lightly, and never siding with the oppressor. We may or may not having vehemently opposed the unjust wars which have happened around the world, but the foreign policy has done well to be consistent with the principles of non-alignment, which leaves as well poised to be on the right side of history.

The song I am presenting today says as much. The lyricist is Sarvar and the composer is Ravi. Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle are singing this with accompanying chorus.

Jab tak mai ek charaagh jalaaun na raah mein
Tab tak yeh daur mujh ko hawaa se daraayega

My pick from the above given collection. 🙂

Jung ka dushman
aman ka saathhi

aur jai hind hamaara naara hai
Jung ka dushman

aa aa aaa aaa aaaaa

Sarojani, Sultana
Jhaansi ki Raani ban jaao
veer hain ham kamzor nahi

desh ki raksha karna
sab se pehla farz hamaara hai

ham hain Hindustani
aur jai hind hamaara naara hai
Jung ka dushman

hindustan hamaara hai
ham hain Hindustani
aur jai hind hamaara naara hai
hindustan hamaara hai
hindustan hamaara hai

keh do yeh lalkaar ke chal kar
unn badhte toofaanon se

keh do yeh lalkaar ke chal kar
unn badhte toofaanon se

khair issi mein hai ke
peechhe hat jaao maidanon se
khair issi mein hai ke
peechhe hat jaao maidanon se

khel nahin hai takraana
azaadi ki deewaaron se
doob nahi sakti yeh naiyya
Nehru khewanhara hai

ham hain Hindustani
aur jai hind hamaara naara hai
Jung ka dushman
aman ka saathhi
hindustan hamaara hai
ham hain Hindustani
aur jai hind hamaara naara hai
hindustan hamaara hai
hindustan hamaara hai
hindustan hamaara hai
hindustan hamaara hai

Today’s song is from the film Shiv Bhakta-1955.

This film was made by A.V.M, Madras in their Madras Studio. This is actually the story of Bhakta Kannappa, on whom AVM had made the original Bilingual film in Telugu and Kannada in 1954. This Hindi remake was made in 1955. According to folklore, Lord Shiv ji also blessed Kannappa to be reborn in Kaliyuga as one of his greatest devotees, as Kannappa and to be liberated from birth and rebirth.

I have yet to see a 100 % Atheist in my 85 years of life. Many people claim that they don’t believe in God, but in their difficulties they either blame God or pray to God for relief ! Basically, Indians are born as God fearing and have a religious tendency and mindset from the childhood. Not all people exhibit this sentiment but the increasing crowds in Holy places, temples and Kumbh Melas or Sabarimala yatra, Pandharpur Wari, Char Dham yatra and Mata Vaishno Devi yatra etc are living examples of the religious nature of common Indians. The temples of Indian Gods e.g. Jagannath Puri, Shri Balaji, Kali Mata, Kashi Vishwanath etc. are the richest in India, where devotees offer money and other valuables like Gold, Diamonds etc.

As of today, I personally feel that the Indian culture and the religion is kept alive by Southern states primarily. No wonder then, that Mythological films are extremely popular in the South. Most of the Acting, Direction and Music legends from the South started their careers from acting or being a part of some Religious film in Southern languages.

Famous actor M G Ramchandran also known as MGR debuted in Sathi Leelavathi-1936, Anjali Devi in Raja Harischandra-36, Sivaji Ganeshan in Parasakthi-52, A.Nageshwar Rao or ANR, in Dharma Patni-41. N T Rama Rao or NTR acted either as Rama or Krishna in 52 films from 1950 to 1955 after his debut in 1949.

Both Tamil and Telugu films,in their initial phases, constituted a major chunk of Religious and Mythological films. Hindi films are no match for South films, as far as variety and contents of this film genre is concerned. Unlike Hindi films, South films take a lot of effort in presenting religious films, remaining very close and true to the original stories in Puranas, without depending too much on the fertile imaginations of their ” story departments” like Hindi films.

Many south films are dubbed in Hindi. Famous production houses of the south, like AVM, Prasad productions, Nagi Reddy’s Vauhini or Vijaya Studios, Vassan etc were known to make big Mythologicals in those days. In addition, famous legendary Directors used to direct such films. Today’s film Shiv Bhakta is also directed by one such legend from south- H L N Simha or H. Laxi Nar Simha. His name is not known outside the south, but in the south, especially in the Kannada film world, he was a highly respected personality.

H L N Simha was born on 25-7-1904, at a village Madhalli, in Malavalli in Mandya district of Karnataka. Starting as an actor in Dramas, he soon established his own drama company-” Chandrakala Natak Mandali”,along with a fellow actor Mohd. Peer. His first film was Sanskara Nauka-36,in which he was an actor, writer, screenplay writer and its Director too. He is famous for locating and introducing Dr. Rajkumar into films. Raja Sulochana and Pandaribai are also his discoveries. He was credited for making Dr. Rajkumar work in a Telugu film, under his direction-” Kalahasti Mahatmyam”-54. This was Rajkumar’s only film outside Kannada language !

Mr.Simha served the stage and film industry for nearly half a century. His interest in stage began when he was a young lad and wrote his short play, ‘Destiny Rules Humanity’ and brought it on stage with Mohamed Peer, another renowned stage actor of yesteryears. Later he joined the famous Varadachar Drama Company and began playing minor roles.

Appreciating the stage talent of Mr.Simha, Gubbi Veeranna sent him to Bombay, present Mumbai, for training in film direction. After the training, Mr.Simha joined hands with Mr.Gubbi Veeranna as Assistant Director and produced a silent movie, “His Love Affair”. His major stage play, “Samsara Nouka” (the life’s boat) brought him rich encomiums as a top drama producer and director. It was brought on stage during 1933. Breaking the tradition of Pouranic plays, “Samasara Nouke” tread a new path. It became the first social play in Kannada touching upon the prevailing social issues and conditions like dowry, unemployment and widow marriage. Simha played the leading role as Maadhu, while Peer Sab as Sundara in this play, which was staged in the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu also, besides in several places in Karnataka.

His role as Shahajan in the same title play and as Chenna in ‘Gouthama Buddha’ play brought him more laurels. Then leading stage personalities like T.P.Kailasam, Pandit Taranath and Thirumale Thatacharya Sharma were among those who lauded the acting abilities of Mr.Simha, apart from his abilities as a director of Kannada plays.

Simha later set up his own troupe, “Simha’s Select Artistes” and produced dramas like “Abba Aa Hudugi”, “Bamgarada Bara”, “Madhakari Nayaka”. Those who acted in these dramas included Rathnakar and M.V.Narayana Rao (who spoke at the function on July 27), film script writer Sorot Aswath, and M.V.Rajamma.

The next phase in the life of Mr.Simha was that of a film producer. Then famous film producer of Madras, Mr. K.Rajagopala Chettiar invited Mr. Simha to produce his famous play “Samsara Nouka’ as a film. Taking up the challenge of producing a social Kannada film for the first time, Mr.Simha introduced to the film industry B.R.Panthulu, M.V.Rajamma, Dikki Madhava Rao, Tamash Madhava Rao, Hunsur Krishnamurthy and Hanumantha Rao, who later became leading personalities in the Kannada film world.

When Mr. Simha was looking for a suitable person for his ‘Bedara Kannappa’, he saw Mutthu Raju, now Dr. Rajkumar, who has now become a household name in the film industry, at Nanjangud and gave him the new name in the lead role. This film became a hit and brought Dr.Rajkumar to limelight. Apart from Dr.Rajkumar, Mr.Simha introduced several other famous personalities like G.V.Iyer, Narasimha Raju, Raja Sulochana, Honnappa Bhagavathar, Raja Shankar, B. Hanumanthachar to the film world.

Mr.Simha’s last film was “Anugraha” in 1970, had a song written by his son, Mr.Sheshachandra. But unfortunately, Mr.Simha was not alive to see the film, when it was released. He passed away on July 3, 1972, leaving a legend behind him, which, unfortunately very few remember today.

Film Shiv Bhakta-1955 was made by AVM, Madras. The MD was the Melody King – Chitragupta. He was very popular with Southern Producers and many opted for him in the 1950’s decade – which was the Golden decade for Religious films. 121 Religious films were made from 1951 to 1960, averaging to 1 new religious film every month for 10 continuous years !. The cast of the film consisted of Shahu Modak, Padmini, Anant Kumar ( brother of Ram Marathe- initially a child artiste in films but later on a famous classical singer), Ragini, Pandari Bai and many southern artistes. Pandhari Bai acted in many Hindi films.

Pandari Bai (18-9-1928 to 29 January 2003) was an actress of South Indian languages films, mostly in Kannada language during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. She was born on 18-9-1928 at Bhatkal, Karnatak, to Kaveri Bai and Ranga Rao. She is considered Kannada cinema’s first successful heroine. She has acted as both heroine and mother to stalwarts such as Rajkumar, M. G. Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan. She was the heroine in Rajkumar’s debut movie Bedara Kannappa and also Sivaji’s debut movie Parasakthi. She has acted in over 1,000 films in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. Bai was honoured by Kalaimamani from the Tamil Nadu government.

Pandaribai began her career in acting in plays based on mythological stories before making her film debut in 1943 with the Kannada language film, Vani. She appeared in the 1954 Kannada film Bedara Kannappa opposite Rajkumar. In the film, she played Neela, wife of Kanna (played by Rajkumar), a hunter. She established herself as a lead actress portraying a woman with a “progressive” image assuming the burdens of a feudal patriarchy in films such as Sant Sakhu (1955) and Rayara Sose (1957). In 1959, she appeared in Abba Aa Hudugi, with her sister Mynavathi. The film is considered a landmark in Kannada cinema.

Later in her career Pandari Bai played the mother of stars older than her, most of whom had played the lead with her in her earlier years. She worked in 27 Hindi films. Her first Hindi film was Bahar-52, in which Vaijayantimala made her Debut in Hindi films. Pandharibai’s Hindi pronunciation initially was typically south indian, but over a period, she improved her diction. Her last Hindi film was Time Bomb-1996. However, after her death on 29-1-2003, 3 more delayed Hindi films were released. She came to be known to Hindi audiences mainly due to her role in the film Bhabhi-57. Some of her famous Hindi films were Panchayat-58, Paigham-59, Rakhwala-71, Apna desh-72 and Sampoorna Ramayan-1973.

The story of today’s film Shiv Bhakta-1955 was….

Manimant and Alka are a happy couple in Gandharva Lok. Due to a curse by Indra, they have to take birth on Earth. They are found in the jungle by a Hunter who adopts them and brings them up. When they are young, they are married as Deena and Neela. They live a happy life, but some bad elements in their tribe spread rumours about them and they are thrown out of the village. Deena is very angry and becomes a nastik (atheist) because, for no fault of theirs, god has punished them. Neela however has deep faith in God.

One day when Deena could not get any animal for hunting, tired he sits at a place, which happens to be a Shiva Temple. The priest Kashinath finds out about him and asks him to repeat the mantra “Om Namah Shivay” continuously till he gets an animal. Deena, without knowing anything about it, starts the Japa and after some time his heart is filled with bhakti Rasa and love for God.

The chief Priest Kailashnath is a bogus person. He steals God’s jewellery and gives it to his dancer girlfriend Rani. When the theft comes to light, Deena is accused of the theft as he was in the temple. For the second time he has to suffer for no fault. Deena and Neela continue the Japa of Om Namah shivay and are ready to give the supreme sacrifice with their lives, when Lord Shiva appears before them and takes them to Gandharvalok again.

Now let us enjoy today’s video song, sung by Asha Bhosle and Rafi with Chorus……

#the Decade of Fifties – 1951 – 1960 #
—————————————————————

Today I am presenting a song from the 1960 movie “Mukti”. This movie was introduced on the blog by our Shri Sudhir jee on 09.06.2017. So it is already seven years now since the movie was introduced on this blog.

In ‘2017’ I was in Kenya for my job, and it was only in ‘2020’ when I had already come back to India that I had posted my comment on this first song ‘dil lubha ke mere saathee bhool jaanaa naa’ of this movie ‘Mukti-1960’ on the blog. The above song that Sudhir jee posted is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and it was the 3200th song of Lata Mangeshkar on this blog.

I was aware of a movie of the same title which was released in ‘1977’. But ‘Mukti-1960’ was unfamiliar to me. Today while browsing the blog, I came across this movie title again. Since only one song of this movie was posted, this piqued my interest to look for and listen to the other songs of this movie.

“Mukti-1960” was directed by N. Buli for ‘Gurudev Pictures, Bombay’. N Buli was also the producer of this movie as per information given in Geet Kosh Vol-III (1951-1960). The cast of this movie had Nalini Jaywant, Motilal, Anant Kumar, Sulochana, Krishnakumari, S.N. Bannerjee, Bhudo Advani, R. P. Kapoor, Hemlata, Master Kishore, Baby Raj, Mintobai, Kesho, Kathana, Ram Raseela, Raj Sood, Sheela, Umesh Sharma, Tuntun, Prem Kumar, Kiranmala, Indira Bansal and others. This movie was certified by Censor Board on 24.02.1960.

“Mukti-1960” has nine songs in it. The lyricists for these nine songs are Munir Aarzoo Kazmi (seven songs) and Aarzoo Lakhnawi (two songs). Music for this movie was composed by Malay Chakravarti. The singers for this movie are Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, and Lata Mangeshkar. But the singer’s names are mentioned for individual six songs only in Geet Kosh. The other three songs remain without the name of the singer for these songs. However the ‘foot note’ of this movie page mentions Geeta Dutt, and G.M. Durrani as the playback singer for this movie with Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle and Mohd Rafi.

Today I am presenting the second song from this movie. It is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Mohd Rafi. And what a wonderful song this is. This will take you back to the era of those ‘golden melodies’. The singing of Mohd Rafi and Asha Bhonsle creates magic as they always do. But I do not remember to have listened to or found this song in the various compilations that cassette companies brought out on Rafi-Asha duets. This song between two lovers fallen in love is a nice song and one can easily include it in the ‘chitrahaar’ category songs 🙂 Lyricist for the today’s song is Munir Aarzoo Kazmi and this song is his second song on the blog. Other than ‘Mukti-1960’ he wrote one song for the movie ‘Naqaab Posh-1956’ (which is already covered on the blog).

Editor’s note:- This songs sounds like Dekha ek khwaab to ye silsile huye but precedes this “Silsila”(1981) song by 21 years.

It was mentioned by Shri Sudhir jee in his post about Music Composer Malay Chakravarti :-

“The music director’s name is another new and unfamiliar one – Malay Chakravarty. The name does not appear anywhere else in the Geet Kosh, except for one regional film (a Chhatisgarhi film – ‘Kahin Debe Sandes’ from 1965)”.

Unless some new information becomes available about this composer, all we have now are his compositions from this movie ‘Mukti-1960’.

I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.

Let us listen to this song now…
