78th Independence day – 15th August, 2024

The nation grows older by one more year on 15th August. And hopefully wiser too. Among the nations formed in 20th century, post world wars scenario, we have indeed come a long way, and hopefully shall grow, by leaps and bounds.

The cultural conflux and amalgamation, is what makes this country what it is, that the world looks up to us for the colourful heritiage, for the values of humanity, for intellectual and literary wealth.

But the fact is also that what was important in 20th century, may not be so relevant in 21st century. We are looking at a vaccum forming in the world power structure. All of us must look after our own interests and also look outward for the sake of survival of the civilization. The climate change and disasters are a reality, and no one can hide from this truth. Wars and killing of innocents, as a casualty of a power tussle, has made the last century quite painful for societies around the world. And people are learning and taking note of the atrocities. While tussle for power will be a point of contention, it may not necessarily mean that nations have to go to physical wars. So, the world is learning and de-learning the tactics of warfare, which may reduce dependence on the arms and weapons.

Our survival depends on mutual co-operation with greater sharing of information and technology among ourselves. I have read somewhere that the mobile phone technology / internet communication was already available to some and they were using it for superiority at war times, much earlier than it became available to public. For all the advantage, it gave to some nations over others, the relevance and advantages have all gone by now, in less than a century. So, the times are changing and change is happening faster than it happened in 20th century.

I came across a few “Asha’ar” being shared by different people, on a whatsapp group, in some discussion. “charaagh” and ‘hawaa’ were the words, which are the common link between them. I am sharing a few here :

1. Kitna mushkil hai jalaana kisi raste mein charaagh
Kitna aasaan hai hawaaon ko ishaara karna

2. Main ne yeh jaan kar hi jalaya thha ek charaagh
Ab jo bhi aayegaa wo hawaa le ke aayega

3. Agarche zor hawaaon ne daal rakkha hai
Magar charaagh ne lau ko sambhaal rakkha hai

4. In charaaghon mein tel hi kam thha
Kyun gila phir hamen hawaa se rahe

5. Jab tak mai ek charaagh jalaaun na raah mein
Tab tak yeh daur mujh ko hawaa se daraaye ga

6. Meri zindagi ka maqsad ke sabhi ko faiz pahunche
Main charaagh-e-reh guzar hoon mujhe shauq se jalaao

7. Kaun taakon pe raha kaun sar-e-rehguzar
Shehar ke saare charaaghon ko hawaa jaanti hai

In another context, I am recalling the remarkable poetry and scene it creates in this shair:

Aabla paa koyi iss dasht mein aaya hogaa
Warna aandhi mein diya kis ne jalaaya hogaa

(Link)

A “Charaagh” in the poetic sense is the source of light, substance, or the guidance. The function of ‘Charaagh’ is to put light on a matter, i.e. “roshni daalna”. To make it ‘ujaagar’, Ayaan or to reveal the matter. That is not the destination;

Guzar jaa aql se aage ke yeh noor
Charaagh e raah hai, manzil nahin hai

So charaagh, lamp or diya is the means to an end.

We all know that India is known as a sane nation, not taking war lightly, and never siding with the oppressor. We may or may not having vehemently opposed the unjust wars which have happened around the world, but the foreign policy has done well to be consistent with the principles of non-alignment, which leaves as well poised to be on the right side of history.

The song I am presenting today says as much. The lyricist is Sarvar and the composer is Ravi. Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle are singing this with accompanying chorus.

Jab tak mai ek charaagh jalaaun na raah mein
Tab tak yeh daur mujh ko hawaa se daraayega

My pick from the above given collection. 🙂

Lyrics

Jung ka dushman
aman ka saathhi
hindustan hamaara hai
ham hain Hindustani
aur jai hind hamaara naara hai
Jung ka dushman
aman ka saathhi
hindustan hamaara hai
ham hain Hindustani
aur jai hind hamaara naara hai
hindustan hamaara hai
hindustan hamaara hai

haathh pe haathh
na rakh kar baittho
aao qadam badhaao
haathh pe haathh
na rakh kar baittho
aao qadam badhaao

apne inn faulaadi
haathhon ke jauhar dikhlaao

apne inn faulaadi
haathhon ke jauhar dikhlaao

aaj himaalay ki choti par
yeh jhanda lehraao

yeh jaagir hamaari hai
iss par adhikaar hamaara hai

ham hain Hindustani
aur jai hind hamaara naara hai
hindustan hamaara hai
hindustan hamaara hai

aa aa aaa aaa aaaaa
aaa aaa aaaa aaaaaaaaa

aao behno uttho aur
mardon ka haathh bataao
Sarojani, Sultana
Jhaansi ki Raani ban jaao
veer hain ham kamzor nahi
yeh duniya ko dikhlaao
desh ki raksha karna
sab se pehla farz hamaara hai

ham hain Hindustani
aur jai hind hamaara naara hai
Jung ka dushman
aman ka saathhi
hindustan hamaara hai
ham hain Hindustani
aur jai hind hamaara naara hai
hindustan hamaara hai
hindustan hamaara hai

keh do yeh lalkaar ke chal kar
unn badhte toofaanon se

keh do yeh lalkaar ke chal kar
unn badhte toofaanon se

khair issi mein hai ke
peechhe hat jaao maidanon se
khair issi mein hai ke
peechhe hat jaao maidanon se

khel nahin hai takraana
azaadi ki deewaaron se
doob nahi sakti yeh naiyya
Nehru khewanhara hai

ham hain Hindustani
aur jai hind hamaara naara hai
Jung ka dushman
aman ka saathhi
hindustan hamaara hai
ham hain Hindustani
aur jai hind hamaara naara hai
hindustan hamaara hai
hindustan hamaara hai
hindustan hamaara hai
hindustan hamaara hai
