‘Dekhaa Pyaar Tumhaaraa’ (1963) is an obscure film which I came to know only because of its title song which used to be often heard on Vividh Bharati during my younger days. The film was produced by Taher under the banner of Mamta Movies. The film was directed by K Pervez (Kalpataru). The cast included Subiraj and Naaz in the lead role with the support cast of Achala Sachdev, Madan Puri, Bhagwan, Sadhna Chowdhary, Helen, Sham Kumar, Lotan, Baby Ismat etc.

This was the first film in which Subiraj and Naaz got the lead roles. They had acted together for the first time in ‘Chhaila Babu’ (1967) in the late 1950s but got a delayed release in 1967. In ‘Mera Ghar Mere Bachche’ (1960), both of them had the second lead roles. During the shooting of this film, Naaz and Subiraj (son of Kailash Kakkar, sister of Prithviraj Kapoor) became close and decided to marry. However, families from both sides were against this marriage. Their courtship continued for the next 5 years. It was during the making of ‘Dekha Pyaar Tumhaara’ (1963), they got married while on the outdoor shooting of the film in Pratapgarh Fort. They returned to Mumbai as a married couple.

I liked all the six songs of the film which tempted me to watch the film on one of the video sharing platforms. There is not much in the film to talk about. The VCD of the film appears to be an edited one as a few scenes in the film have no continuity with the next scenes. I am not able to make out whether the film is a mystery or romantic comedy. Two of the six songs which includes the title song, do not find place in the VCD of the film. I have, therefore, attempted to assemble from the film the broad outline of the story as set out below:

The film starts with police receiving a call to report of the theft of purse of a lady by an unidentified girl sitting next to her. On the basis of the description given by the lady, police identify a girl running away from them. In the chase, police lose sight of her movement as she had taken a refuge in a house to hide from the police. The girl hiding from the police is Madhuri (Naaz) and the house belongs to Shanti (Achla Sachdev).

Madan (Madan Puri) and Ramesh (Sham Kumar) are members of a gang of anti-social activities and Madhuri is working for them. One day, Ramesh reads an advertisement of a missing 18-year girl with fair complexion and a mole on her left cheek who is a daughter of a wealthy person. It also says that the finder will be suitably rewarded. Ramesh has observed that Madhuri has a mole on her left cheek. Madan and Ramesh decide to use Madhuri for missing daughter to extract money from the wealthy person.

Sudhakar, a detective is killed, and Madan’s henchmen take his dead body to a cemetery to bury him. Raj (Siburaj) and Prabhu (Bhagwan) are two unemployed youth who are wandering in the city in search of employment. Prabhu gives his coat to Raj to sell to raise money and bring some eatables. Thereafter Prabhu strolls through the cemetery when he comes across a dead body. He panics and wants to run away from the site when he is attacked by the henchmen. Fortunately, Raj arrives, and they both fight with them to make them run away. They come to know that the dead body was that of Sudhakar who was investigating the case of the missing daughter of Shanti.

Raj and Prabhu visit Shanti’s residence in the guise of detectives and apprise her that Sudhakar has been killed and they have taken over the investigation of her missing daughter. Shanti gives them some advance to proceed with the investigation. She also assures them that they will be handsomely rewarded if they are able to trace her daughter.

Meanwhile, Madan and Ramesh come to know that there is a big party in a night club which is a perfect ground for them to steal jewelleries. Raj and Prabhu, as their first step of detective job, visit the same night club. When a dance programme was going on, Madhuri, in the guise of a man steals Sadhana’s (Sadhana Chowdhary) necklace and passes it to Madan. As soon as the theft has come to the knowledge, club authorities do not allow anyone to leave the club till police arrive. Madan puts the necklace in Prabhu’s pocket. Raj and Prabhu fearing that police would come to know them as imposter, they manage to escape from the club.

During the course of their so-called investigation, they have developed soft corners for Madhuri and Sadhana respectively. They have also spent time with them to know them better. When Prabhu finds the necklace in his pocket, he recognises that it belongs to Sadhana. He decides to return the necklace to Sadhana. Madan on the other hand had sent his men to track Prabhu to recover the necklace but in vein.

When Madan comes to know that Madhuri is in love with Raj, he fears that his plan to present Madhuri as Shanti’s missing daughter would go awry as she may reveal his plan to Raj. So, Madan put his plan on fast track and takes Madhuri to Shanti as her missing daughter. Shanti is extremely happy to have her daughter back with her. Madan tells Shanti to be cautious about Raj who, in the guise of loving Madhuri, is having an eye on her wealth. With this, Shanti does not allow Raj to visit her house and keeps Madhuri away from him.

Prabhu also faces the same treatment in Sadhana’s house when he visits to return her necklace. Madan has already briefed Sadhana’s father that Prabhu has stolen her necklace, but he returned the necklace just to create a good impression on him and Sadhana. After gaining confidence, Prabhu may plan to rob them of their wealth. So, Madan has succeeded in creating doubts in the minds of both the families by which Madhuri has to keep quite lest her secret as an imposter daughter could get revealed. There is nothing left for Sadhana to defend Prabhu because the necklace was found with him after the theft. So, it is a perfect checkmate for Raj and Prabhu by Madan and Ramesh.

To break the deadlock, Raj visits Shanti’s house in the guise of a music teacher to teach music to Madhuri. But Madan exposes Raj. Shanti is angry with Madhuri that her own daughter has cheated her. It is at this point she reveals that she is not her daughter but planted as such by Madan and Ramesh to extract wealth from her. When Madhuri says that she works for Ramesh Gupta, a memory flashback comes to Shanti’s mind. Ramesh used to work for Shanti’s husband, but Ramesh had his eyes on Shanti. When her husband gets killed, Ramesh proposes to marry her. But she rejects his advances and insults him. As a revenge, Ramesh kidnaps her daughter who grows up as Madhuri.

With this background, it is proved that both Raj and Prabhu are honest in their endeavour. The families of Shanti and Sadhana with Raj and Prabhu set a plan to catch Madan and Ramesh. With police help, they are eventually caught and arrested with happy ending for Raj and Prabhu.

‘Dekhaa Pyaar Tumhaaraa’ (1963) had six songs written by Majrooh Sultanpuri which were set to music by Raj Ratan. Three songs have been covered on the Blog. I am presenting the 4th song, ‘haay re haay maasoom inshaare’ rendered by Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle who sing for Bhagwan and Sadhna Chowdhary, respectively.

Sadhna Chowdhary is one of the early dancers of the 1950s who shifted to character roles in the 1960s. One can watch her as a club dancer in dheere dheere dil mein samaa ke dekh from ‘Ten O Clock’ (1958), as a mujra dancer in mujhe tarke taalluk ke liye samjhaayaa jaataa hai from ‘Sahaara’ (1958) and as a street dancer in bichchde huye milenge phir from ‘Post Box No.999’ (1958). She has worked in about 20 films from 1951 to 1963. Thereafter, she appears to have vanished from Hindi films industry.
