This article is the 18700th song post in the blog and 100th song of Sardar Malik in the blog as a music diector.

Blog Day :

6000 Post No. : 18700

I have mentioned it several times that after posting the century post in the blog, I heave a huge sigh of relief and start relaxing, secure in the knowledge that the next century post was far far away. But the next century post occasion arrives way earlier (it seems to me) than expected. It demonstrates that posting 100 articles is not such a daunting task if one just avoids DOT days and posts one or two articles in a day.

To make things even more spicy, this century post is coming on a day when the blog has turned exactly 6000 days old ! 6000 days if divided by 365 tells us that the blog is running for 16 years and 155 days viz roughly 16 years and six months.

Some regulars who keep an eagle eye on these developments have already given congratulations in advance on the occasion of the next century post viz post number 18700, which they are certain would arrive today to coincide with 6000th day of the blog. This is the 18700th post in the blog.

What was it like when the blog reached its earlier thousandth days ? I checked up and here is the summary:-

occasion Date Posts Total posts in 1000 days Cumulative number posts for the blog Remarks
1000th day 14 April 2011 6 posts 3788 posts 3788 posts The occasion was not noticed on the blog
2000th day 8 January 2014 6 posts 5479 posts 9267 posts The occasion was not noticed on the blog
3000th day 4 October 2016 4 posts 3157 posts 12424 posts The occasion was not noticed on the blog
4000th day 1 July 2019 3 posts 2676 posts 15101 posts 4000th day was noticed on the blog. Blog post number 15100 was posted which discussed a great environmentalist Jadav Payeng of Assam
5000th day 27 March 2022 3 posts 1799 posts 16900 posts 5000th day was noticed on the blog. Blog post number 16900 was published which covered an extremely rare song
6000th day 21 December 2024 4 posts 1800 posts 18700 posts The song under discussion

It can be noticed that the number of songs posted during 1000 days period is coming down and the last two such periods saw 1799 and 1800 songs getting covered at the rate of 1.8 songs per day. In contrast, 5479 song posts appeared in the blog during the second thousandth period (1001th day to 2000th day) at an amazing strike rate of 5.5 songs daily.

There was a time when the overall strike rate of the blog was as high as 4.62. If the blog had continued with that rate then we would have crossed 27000 songs by now ! It shows the merits of being regular and steady and doing a little extra everyday that makes such a big difference in the long run.

Nevertheless, 18700 in itself is quite a large number. One major reason for slowing down is that we nowadays have to do lots of background work which was not the case in the past. With such a large number of songs already covered in the blog, searching for suitable songs to cover and finding the as yet concovered songs (which are often rare songs) is a time consumuing exercise.

We often try to combine our century posts with century posts of other artists. But sometimes it is not possible because of incorrect calculations. For instance, when the previous blog century was approaching, I thought I could combine it with the century post of a lyricist. But it turned out that the lyricist (Aarzoo Lucknowi) had already completed his century in the blog and I had failed to count his songs correctly.

This time, I wanted to combine this blog century with century post of a singer. Same thing happened this time too. It turned out that he (Suresh Wadkar) is exactly on 100 and not 98 that the right side of the blog was indicating for him. Updating the blog and finding out the two songs that I had failed to show as Suresh Wadkar song took me nearly one whole day yesterday.

Then I thought that the next singer (Bhupinder Singh) could be discussed who was on 98 songs according to my excel sheet. But on checking in the blog, he was on 94. Searching for missing entries would have taken me considerable time, so I decided to look for another artist.

It turns out that music director Sardar Malik is on 99 songs. So one of his as yet uncovered song can be used as the blog century song. So I began searching for Sardar Malik songs. I noticed that he had worked a lot with Asha Bhonsle. Almost every song that I was finding was Asha Bhonsle solo. I found some songs sung by other singers as well. But all these songs did not fit the bill.

Finally I have located a song that seems to fit the bill. This song is from “Taxi 555″(1958). It is a rare and fun song to listen to. The song is a duet of Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. Prem Dhawan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Sardar Malik.

On listening to the song, we find that this song is nearly an Asha Bhonsle solo because Rafi only utters monosyllables in the song ( a grand total of 12 words) while Asha Bhonsle sings almost the entire song. Lyrics are quite amusing.

Only audio of this rare song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

I take this opportunity to thank one and all for their continous support that had enabled this blog to complete such a marathon run of 6000 days with aplomb. I hope we will keep chugging along and will pass many more centuries and thousandths of songs and days. As usual, we will take fresh guard and start covering more songs as my experience has taught me that the blog century post keeps arriving in the blog at regular intervals. 🙂

Song-Balam mere ban gaye gentleman (Taxi 555) Singers-Asha Bhonsle, Rafi, Lyrics-Prem Dhawan, MD-Sardar Malik

Lyrics

Ho gaye gentleman
balam mere ban gaye gentleman
cigarette piya
paan bhee khaaya
chashmon se dhak liye nain
nain lo ho gaye gentleman
balam mere ha
preetam mere ho
sajan mere
aaye
haay

suit jo pehna
boot jo pehna
chaal badal ke baabu
aaj zameen pe paanv lage na
waah fashion ka jaadu
aise dekhe
aise akde
jaise ho leftent
balam mere ban gaye gentleman
sajan mere ban gaye gentleman
cigarette piya
paan bhee khaaya
chasmon se dhak liye nain
nain lo ho gaye gentleman
balam mere haay
preetam mere ho
sajan mere
aaye
haay

galey mein tie aise lagaayee
jaise lagee ho faansi
sapne dekhe ab london ke
bhool ke mathura kashi
shut up
bole git-pit
samjhe khit-pit
kaise aaye chain
balam mere ban gaye gentleman
sajan mere ban gaye gentleman
cigarette piya
paan bhee khaaya
chasmon se dhak liye nain
nain lo ho gaye gentleman
balam mere ha
preetam mere ho
sajan mere
aaye
haay

naklee aankhen laga ke
aslee aankhen pher na lena
roop to badla
dil na badalna
dekho daga na dena
oy hoy
seedhee raah per
aao mister
chhodo tedhee line
balam mere ban gaye gentleman
balam mere hoy
preetam mere hoy
sajan mere
aay haaye
