Rafi Sb – In The Seventies – 14
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – -

(1977 – Duet)

Come 1977 and Shatrughan Sinha had been around in films for about 8 years now. He already had two Filmfare awards for best supporting actor under his belt – in 1971 for ‘Paaras’ and 1975 for ‘Dost’. On screen, majority of his roles have a style – freewheeling, assertive and emphatic, whether being the smug good guy or the abrasive bad guy. In the seventies, Shatrughan Sinha was one of the busier actors in the industry, averaging 8 to 9 films a year.

This sampling of the Rafi Sb duet from 1977, brings together Shatrughan Sinha and Neetu Singh in young lover’s romance story – ‘Ab Kya Hoga’. Usha Khanna composed the music for this film and in this song, she has Rafi Sb singing for Shatrughan Sinha and Asha Bhosle singing for Neetu Singh. A party song with the lead pair appearing at their dazzling best, the video clip also includes Asrani, Pichoo Kapoor and a (then) new comer Ferita Bayas seen in the company of Asrani.

The lyrics are written by Saawan Kumar (aka Saawan Kumar Taak), who is also the director of this film. Saawan Kumar is known better for being a producer and director, and has directed about 20 films in his career since the early 1970s. Besides that, he has also penned some wonderful songs, mostly for his own films. Numbers like “Barkha Raani Zaraa Jam Ke Barso” from ‘Sabak’ (1973) and “Teri Galiyon Mein Naa Rakhenge Kadam” from ‘Hawa’ (1974) are favorites that make the selection lists from the 1970s.

Listen to this wonderful duet from 1977. The voice of Rafi Sb – sounding fresh as ever.

Enjoy.

Song-Sar e mehfil mera imaan beimaan ho gaya(Ab Kya Hoga)(1977) Singers-Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Sawan Kumar, MD-Usha Khanna

Lyrics

Sare mehfil
mera imaan
beimaan ho gaya
o yaaron ab kya hoga
yaaron ab kya hoga
mera qaatil
mere ghar mein
mera mehmaan ho gayaa
o yaaron ab kya hoga
yaaron ab kya hoga
wahi hoga
jo manzoor e khuda hoga
khuda hoga

shareeq e zindagi hona
tera ehsaan ho gayaa
o yaaron ab kya hoga
yaaron ab kya hoga
wahi hoga
jo manzoor e khuda hoga
khuda hoga

o yaaron ab kya hoga
yaaron ab kya hoga

nahin thhe hum kisi qaabil
jagah de di hamen dil mein
karen hum shukriya kaise
ke rakhh li laaj mehfil mein
na phoolon ki tamanna hai
na chaahat hai sitaaron ki
tumhaare pyaar ke aage
zaroorat kya bahaaron ki
tumhaari baahon mein rehna
mera armaan ho gaya

o yaaron ab kya hoga
yaaron ab kya hoga
wahi hoga
jo manzoor e khuda hoga
khuda hoga

o yaaron ab kya hoga
yaaron ab kya hoga

zameen ki tum nahin lagtin
kahaan se aayi ho bolo
meri jaan husn pariyon saa
kahaan se laayi ho bolo
zameen ki tum nahin lagtin
kahaan se aayi ho bolo
meri jaan husn pariyon saa
kahaan se laayi ho bolo
khudaa ne khud banaaya hai
hamen to aap ki khaatir
ghazal mujh ko banaaya hai
banaa kar aap ko shair
milan par jaaneman apne
khuda hairaan ho gayaa

o yaaron ab kya hoga
yaaron ab kya hoga
sare mehfil
mera imaan
beimaan ho gaya
o yaaron ab kya hoga
yaaron ab kya hoga

Rafi Sb – In The Seventies – 16
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – -

(1978 – Duet)

And with this duet, another film from 1978 makes a debut on the blog. The film is ‘Damaad’ directed by Raja Rakshit. This song I would not categorize as obscure. It was heard relatively more often on the radio, and continues to be alive in memory. And what a gem of a song this one also is.

The song is written by Yogesh, and the music is by Hemant Bhonsle. The singing voices are of Rafi Sb and Asha Bhonsle. On screen, this song is picturized on a very young pair of Amol Palekar and Ranjeeta. I am sure most of us would remember the bell bottomed trousers that were a rage in the 70s, that are sported by Amol Palekar in this song.

Two links are provided, one is a video version and the second is the audio version. The audio version has one extra paragraph. The lyrics of the two versions are same, except for this extra para in the audio version. (There is a spurious solo version also posted, but that is a cut-paste-repeat of Rafi Sb’s lines – have made a complete hash of the song).

This one is another bicycle song, that takes one on a ride through the isolated cycling paths, as young lovers are seen passing through countryside, singing this lovely aria of fondness and affection. The voices of Rafi Sb and Asha ji, a lovely hummable composition, and the matters of young hearts in love.

Listen and enjoy.

“Maryaada”(1971) was produced and directed by Arabind Sen for Lalit Kala Mandir. The movie had Raj Kumar, Rajesh Khanna, Mala Sinha, Helen, Rajinderanath, Pran, Bipin Gupta, Asit Sen, JankiDass, Abhi Bhattacharya,Dulari,Gurnam, Master Babla, Abhimanyu Sharma, Arun, K.Shukla, Lata Bose, Sanjana, Jankidass, Bunty etc in it.

I knew this movie for two of its two playful Kishore Kumar songs viz. Chupke se dil de de nahin te shor mach jaayegaa and Gussa itna haseen hai to pyaar kaisa hoga(Maryada)(1971) and a melancholic Mukesh song Jubaan pe dard bhari daastaan chali aayi(Maryada)(1971).

As many as five songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the sixth song from the movie. This song is sung by Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. It is picturised on Helen and a drunk Raj Kumar, with Pran also visible in this club dance song. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji. S

I had never heard this song during its time. In fact I was not aware that Raj Kumar was there in “Maryaada” (1971). I knew this movie as a Rajesh Khanna starrer. :)

Ashok Kumar or Kumudlal Kunjilal Ganguly (his birth name) would have been 103 if he had been there. Born in 1911, in Bhagalpur Bengal presidency was a laboratory assistant at Bombay Talkies when he was offered a role in 1936 in Jeevan Nayya. Thus began his six-decade long career. Of course by the time I became aware of Ashok Kumar, the actor, he was past doing hero roles and into playing a father or grand father or some such character. But to give credit where due his name would always appear first in the title cards of all these movies. Whether it was the grandpa in “Anuraag”, “Anurodh”, “Khoobsurat” or many such movies. He was very charming in the brief role of Air Force officer in “Aradhana”. He was Vijay Anand’s “Jewel Thief” as well as Brij Sadanah’s “Raja” along with Pran as “Rana” in “Victoria No: 203”. After the 1973 hit Victoria No: 203 this pair was repeated many times.

On the day of the gangout, on my way back from the venue, my Peevesie asked a very valid question. Actually more than a question it was an observation which I have to agree with on giving it a lot of thought. These are her words— “I have seen that people of my generation love to hear songs from either their growing up years or current ones. But how is it that you and your age group relish songs of the late 40s, 50s and 60s.” I think her inference is not wrong. As I can see it, most of the people visiting the blog were kids and youngsters/ teenagers in the 65-75-85 period. And there are many in the group who think that Hindi fillum songs had hit a rock bottom during the 80s. So we gave up on them completely. So much so that we missed out on many melodies of that period. For example the songs of “Sohni-Mahiwal”, “Parinda” “Chandni’ “Lamhe” etc to name a few. So when we discover a few gems on the quest for rare songs to post in the blog we feel “are how did I miss it back then!!!?”

So to rectify matters I am presenting a song from our growing up years.

The song which I thought show cased a very endearing old man is from the 1976 movie “Ek Se Badhkar Ek”. It shows a very spirited Ashok Kumar singing in the voice of Mohd. Rafi in duet with Asha Bhonsle for Padma Khanna. Sharmila Tagore is seen disapproving the old man’s antics with Navin Nischol. There is also Deven Verma playing a Hawaldaar. This Qawwali is written by Verma Malik and Kalyanji Anandji are the music directors.

The blog has seen two dry days in a row when no new posts were made. It is something unusual for the blog but it cannot be avoided. As it is, I was travelling all these days. In fact my travel is not over yet. I have to commence my return journey from today and it will be another couple of days before I arrive back at my base.

I normally try and post even when I am travelling and I am on train. But it was not possible because of various reasons. For instance, you cannot post perched atop side upper berth of AC sleeper coach where you do not have a charging point. :) So I lost valuable journey time that I could have used in blogging.

At the end of that train journey, I found myself in the ilaaka of Sudhir Ji. But before I could meet him, I had to attend to some important matters. I was wondering if I would be able to find enough time for all the activities, seeing that I had an afternoon train to catch. Fortunately I was able to get my other important jobs done by noon and I was ready to meet Sudhir Ji.

I met him and spent just over three hours with him. He told me that likeminded music enthusiasts have a get together every thursday (and today was thursday) but the get together was called off because of lack of enough participants this time. He phoned Mr Bakhshish Singh, one of the active participants of these get togethers, and he joined us soon enough.

We discussed matters of national and international importance, like which city had how many blog regulars. :) I opined that Bangalore and Mumbai had a good concentration of regulars whereas National capital lagged behind in this matter. :) I was informed that regulars may be lesser but there were many who were familiar with the blog. Mr Bakshish Singh reeled off some names. Both Bakshish Singh and Sudhir Ji opined that I should make an elaborate plan the next time so that we could get to meet some of the amazing HFM enthusiasts who live in these parts of the world.

The YIPPEE project spearheaded by Pradeep Raghunathan was also discussed. During the discussion, some rare facts of HFM was mentioned such as the fact that Nirupa Roy is the lyricist of a song (which is erroneously mentioned as written by Bharat Vyas in the blog). Then there is one “Khazanchi”(1941) song where HFGK is not sure about the singer’s identity, but the blog is sure about her identity- that it is sung by Ghulam Haider’s wife. :)

I was in an online conversation with Pradeep Raghunathan before I had boarded my train. Do not forget to get pictures- he had reminded me. Neither I nor Sudhir ji know how to click selfies, I had told him. He hoped that there would be others to click our photos. I remembered this conversation and asked the youngster near us to click our photos in either my mobile or Sudhir Ji’s mobile. “Arre, he has got an iphone”-Sudhir ji pointed out. In other words he, like most youngsers knew everything about taking pictures on mobiles etc. He clicked the pictures of three of us and emailed them to Sudhir ji, and he in turn emailed them to me.

I boarded by afternoon train and arrived at my next destination at midnight. There, instead of going to sleep, I opened my computer (for the first time in 36 hours and checked the email, and put up a get together picture on facebook. I was toying up with the idea of posting a writeup too, but it was 1 A M at midnight at that time and I decided to try and get some sleep instead.

When I woke up in the morning, I felt like a student who had missed two days of classes.:) And these two days happened to be days when some important artists had their anniversaries ! But then it is not the first time in the month that I have been unable to post on the occasion of such anniversaries.

I was wondering what song to post and I spent some time searching for some songs. During my search, I came across a song that I had planned to discuss during an earlier anniversary in the month but was unable to do so at that time.

So here is this duet song from “Khuda Kasam”(1981). This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. It is picturised on Vinod Khanna and Tina Munim. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

He had this unique technique perfected, for which his contemporaries would envy him. There was nothing like it before him, nor now after he is gone. For the want of any better terminology, he would simply call it the “switching on, switching off” technique. On the sets, his was the fastest transition from the self to the role, when the cameras started to roll, and also the fastest pull back to the self from the role, when the director called ‘cut’. I have read this comment by, or heard it in interviews of more than one of his contemporaries, may it be the male or the female artists. They used to marvel at his ability to switch on into the character and the mood in a snap, and then withdraw himself from the character in an instant. Many others would comment that they would take many minutes to get to the right depth of mood and emotions, and after the scene is done, they need time to withdraw from the emotion and return to the normal self.

Remembering Harihar Jethalal Zariwaala aka Sanjeev Kumar aka Hari Bhai, on the anniversary of his untimely and unexpected passage from this world (6th November). Utterly unbelievable that it has been 29 years now that breathed his last. Many an artists have passed away young, at time even younger than what he was when his time came. But just 47 – one misses with regret. But then, it remains an inconsequential exercise of the questions of the type – “What if”?

It seems like just the other day that I saw him on the big screen, pursuing Leena Chandawarkar around the trees, with “O Manchali Kahaan Chali . . .” . That was 1973. And suddenly I realize – he was very successfully doing a rolled in romp of Elvis + Jeetendra, just a year after he had appeared in a senior role – as a father of Jaya Bhaduri in ‘Parichay’ (1972).

Coming on to the silver screen in mid 1960s, he was already heads and shoulders above his contemporaries and his seniors within just a short span of five years. By the close of the decade, he was already averaging 6 to 8 films a year. And, by the close of that decade, in that five short years, he already had memorable performances under his belt – ‘Anokhi Raat’ (1968), ‘Raja Aur Runk’ (1968), of course ‘Sunghursh’ (1968), ‘Dharti Kahe Pukar Ke’ (1969), ‘Gustakhi Maaf’ (1969), ‘Dastak’ (1970), ‘Khilona’ (1970) and more. His success and his popularity stemmed from his refusal to be typecast, taking on roles of every ilk and every color. And by this cognizant and very visible display of lack of concern for an image, he was able to conjure up an image and a following for what he really was – an exceptional artist and performer. God sends one of his kind down to the mortal world, once in may be a couple of centuries.

His timing, his mastery of tiny inflexions and movements that spoke volumes, the sequencing of the body language, the pace of expressions, the depth of emotions – everything was always perfect with him for the character he would be playing. Nothing, absolutely nothing was overdone or exaggerated, unless of course the situation demanded it, and then that exaggeration even was perfectly executed. And with such effortless ease. The one actor who would easily make you forget you are watching a performance – such was the effortless naturalness of his presentation. What a wonder of depth of understanding he carried in his mind, of the psyche of the characters, of the human element, and the awareness of how that character would behave in a situation – a twitch of a muscle, a sharpening or lowering of the voice, what expressions tiny movements of the fingers could do – no use contemplating it. One simply has to savor the pleasure of watch him be another character. No role, no character was out of bounds for him or his image. Or rather his image was – to be the master of characterization. Yes, that is what he was.

This song, its lyrics, and the nudge, was sent to me by Peevesie’s Mom. Apologies for the delay, getting it online here. The film is ‘Uljhan’ from 1975. The film is directed by R Jhalaani, for the banner of Vijyashri Pictures, Bombay. The songs of this film are from the pen of MG Hashmat and the music is by Kalyanji Anandji. The singing voices are of Rafi Sb and Asha Bhosle, with one line interjection in the voice of Sudesh Kumar. On screen, this interjection is inserted by Asrani, as Sanjeev Kumar takes the lead in this song. One can see a very decked up Sulakshana Pandit, being very coy, and showing signs of apprehension. Is this an engagement party? Others, we can see in the video clip are Farida Jalal, who performs the lines sung by Asha ji. Also standing amongst guests is Aruna Irani.

Listen, watch and enjoy – the master craftsman, not letting you feel he is acting. Wonderful memories always, Hari Bhai. Regale audiences wherever you are.

Song-Mujhko to qaatil ki itni pehchaan hai (Uljhan)(1975) Singers-Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-M G Hashmat, MD-Kalyanji Anandji
Sudesh Kumar

Lyrics(Provided by Peevesie’s mom)

mujhko to qaatil ki
itni pehchaan hai
bhola bhaala chehra hai
dil beimaan hai
bhola bhaala chehra hai
dil beimaan hai
mujhko to qaatil ki itni pehchaan hai
bhola bhaala chehra hai
dil beiman hai
nazren jhuka ke bane kaise anjaan hai
bhola bhaala chehra hai
dil beimaan hai
bhola bhaala chehra hai
dil beimaan hai

aise mehfil se uthh ke na jaao
aise mehfil se uthh ke na jaao
paas baitho zara muskuraao
aaj khushiyon ki mehfil saji hai
kal hua jo usey bhool jaao

arre bhai kal ki kya baat hai

husn ki baat hai ye
ishq ka raaz hai ye
zulf thi mehki mehki
har nazar behki behki
bahut bezaar tha dil
shola thha aag tha dil
koi aagosh me tha
magar betaab tha dil
fizaa khamoshiyon ki
dawaa behoshiyon ki
kiye jaati thi paagal
laga thha dil se qaatil
laga thha dil se qaatil
chehre se parda hataa ke rahoonga
chehre se parda hataa ke rahoonga
huaa qatl kaise bataa ke rahoonga
bataa ke rahoonga
jaan lene waale ki
mushkil mein jaan hai
bhola bhaala chehra hai
dil beimaan hai
bhola bhaala chehra hai
dil beimaan hai

aise ilzaam yoon na lagaao
aise ilzaam yoon na lagaao
bhed khul jaayega baaz aao
aaj khushiyon ki mehfil saji hai
kal hua jo usey bhool jaao
wo ghadi yaad karo
chhup ke milte thhe kabhi
aankh ka milna tauba
na kabhi aankh lagi
dinon se lambi raaten
wo khud se khud ki baaten
wo kya majbooriyaan thhin
wo kaisi dooriyaan thhin
dil o jaan haare haare
phirte the maare maare
kahin dum ghut na jaaye
tamanna lut na jaaye
haan
tamanna lut na jaaye
isiliye hum ne sahaara diya thha
kashti e dil ko kinaara diya thha

isiliye husn ko itna guroor hai
isiliye husn ko itna guroor hai
andhi jawaani ka aankhon mein suroor hai
aankhon mein suroor hai
dekho kaise ban thhan ke baithhe janaab hain
ek nahin inko to saat khoon maaf hain
ek nahin inko to saat khoon maaf hain
kaazi aur kaanoon in pe meharbaan hain
bhola bhala chehra hai
dil beimaan hai
bhola bhala chehra hai
dil beimaan hai

“Tarzan Comes To Delhi”(1965) was directed by Kedar Kapoor for Amar Chhaaya pictures. The movie had Bhagwan, Helen, Bela Bose, Dara Singh, Mumtaz, Siddhu, Vishwa Mehra etc in it.

Two songs from this quinessential B grade movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the third song from the movie. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Dattaram.

The song is picturised on Bhagwan and Bela Bose who play tribals, and as is the wont of Hindi filmy tribals, they are ever ready to sing and dance infront of a gathering of an appreciative tribal audience including the tribal chief. :)

Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 6
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – -

The hoof sounds of the returning horses sounded tired and beaten. It was hot and dusty. The sun beat down mercilessly on the sweaty gang members. The lonely tree provided some respite from the blazing heat. Lounging in his hammock tied to it, Mastermind lazily flicked the orangutan walking on his bare arm. The face of Kaalia appeared around the bend in the rocks.

“Kitne aadmi thhe”

“Sardaar, he he”

“Sardaar, das hazaar paanch sau”

Through the tobacco blackened teeth, he propelled a well aimed spit ball at the mountainside rocks. Two of them shattered into smithereens.

“Tera kya hoga kaalia. Itni sulagti dhoop mein bhi jhooth bolne ki aadat nahin gayi”

“Sardar, he he”

“Sardar, main ne aapka namak aur kaali mirch khaaya hai.”

“Kasam se jhooth nahin bolta.”

“Arre o Saamba”

“Suni is namak-mirch waale ki zubaan.”

“Abey, abhi tak to das hazaar paanch sau gaaane wo Raanchiwaale ke blog par bhi nahin hain.”

“Sardar, he he”

“Sardar, kal tak to nahin thhe, par aaj hain”

Quickly, he bent over and picked up his iPad, swiftly tapping and swiping his fingers on the dusty stained screen.

“He he”

“He he”

“Ye to aaj bach gaya. Aaj to sab ke sab bach gaye”

“Mogambo khush huaa”

:D :D :D

Ah yes, it turns out that Kaalia is telling the truth, and today, we have das hazaar paanch sau gaane on the Raanchiwaale ka blog. Sunaa hai ki celebration ke liye saare gang members ko jashan ka nyotaa diya gaya hai. Jashan ki tayyaari Gabbar ke bhai Jabbar Singh Rashtramukh Moochhwaala ki dekh rekh mein chaalu hai. Sab dacaiton ko Andhere raaston se ho kar Ramgarh pahunchana hai. Ye bhi suna hai ke Haylenbai Burmawaali ke khaas naach ka prabandh karne ki koshish jaari hai.

Well, humor apart, many congratulations to the entire team once again. On time, on target, notching up that so tangible half a thousand songs after the mega accomplishment just four short months ago. And I am reminded of another very rare song that was posted exactly two years earlier to the mega milestone – “Ye Kaafila Hai Pyaar Ka Chalta Hi Jaayega” . Yes, this is a labor of love that will keep rolling on and prospering. For there is so much music out there that still needs to be documented and presented.

For this 10,500th offering, I present the next in the series of memory ticklers, a song that is so dear, and at the same time so rare. I have not heard it for years since the radio listening days. It was only a few months back that I got the copy of the songs of the unreleased film ‘Pyaar Banaa Afsaana’ (from sometimes in 1960s) from my collector friend, and got the satisfaction of hearing this song once again, after a long, long time.

Song writer Aziz Kaisi and music director Iqbal Qureshi have teamed up to create some very enduring and memorable songs in this film, that never got made. Aah, but the music – all I can say is, it is time to count the small blessings. Two songs from this film are already showcased here, and this is the third gem from the treasure to find its place here today.

And yes, we have another special reason also to post this song on this mega + half thousand milestone today. You see, this song is sung by Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. OK, you might say, so then what? we have many Rafi – Asha duets already posted. Ah yes, you are right, we have many duets of this pair of singers already posted on the blog. Actually, before this post, there are exactly 399 duets of this pair posted. So this post becomes a very specific celebration – the 400th duet of Rafi Sb and Asha ji, to be posted here.

And as I was preparing for this post, a thought came to my mind. The thought was triggered by a comment by Nalin ji. Oh, forgot to mention that Nalin ji is in Delhi, since the 6th. As expected, we have been having many conversations and get togethers while he is here. And incidentally, Harmandir ji was also in Delhi for one day, during this time. Been a busy few days full of ongoing discussions. As you may know, Nalin ji is a film journalist and a historian, and he wrote a regular column titled ‘Off Track’ in Bombay’s Mid Day newspaper for more than two decades. He is now working to publish these articles in book form. He is planning three books, and the first of them could be published as early as Feb/Mar next year. A number of current discussions are reviews of the articles that are to appear in the book.

These discussions are throwing up real nuggets of information that are sometimes startling. Let me share one. You know about the song from film ‘Sehra’ – “Taqdeer Ka Fasaana Jaa Kar Kise Sunaayen” . I was very startled to find out that the original choice for the singer of this song was Mahendra Kapoor. V Shantaram had a special preference for him, and music director Ramlal was kind of overruled and forced to have this song recorded in the voice of Mahendra Kapoor. So mark my comment, this song is originally recorded in Mahendra Kapoor’s voice. After the recording was done, Ramlal was not feeling good. In his opinion, this was a remarkable composition, and needed better merit and justice. He held a private audience with V Shantaram, and requested him to just try once a see what magic Rafi Sb’s voice could do to this composition. After much discussion, V Shantaram agreed, and the song was re-recorded in Rafi Sb’s voice. After the recording, there were no arguments, and clearly the more impressive version made it into the film.

No, no, I have not lost the thought that was triggered by Nalin ji’s comment. A comment from him sent me to the Geet Kosh, and I did a quick survey and comparison. Would you believe that the number of Rafi-Asha duets are double the number of Rafi-Lata duets, across all the years from mid 1940s to 1980. I was expecting some difference, but was not expecting the numbers to be double. Actually we were discussing the episode where Lata and Rafi did not sing together for some time, due to some differences. Nalin ji commented – “so who lost? For the producers and music directors, Lata was replaceable with Geeta, Asha, Suman and other singers, but for them Rafi’s voice was not replaceable. The controversy made Lata lose a lot in numbers and some very good quality compositions that she could have done wonders with”. On this thought, it occurred to me to just compare the number duets, and the results surprised me also.

Today’s presentation is such a chirpy and melodious construction. It has stayed with me for decades since the first hearing. So here it is, being posted for the listening pleasure of all friends and readers. Listen and enjoy.

Song-O meri bulbul e baghdaad (Naya Paisa)(1958) Singers-Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, MD-S Mohinder

Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)

o meri bulbul e baghdaad
le ke dil mein teri yaad
main barbaad ho gaya
main barbaad ho gaya
main hoon chhoti si ik bulbul
macha doongi chaman mein gul
ke tu saiyaad ho gaya
haaye saiyaad ho gaya

main barbaad ho gaya
main barbaad ho gaya

ghoor ghoor dekhta hai
mujhko ghadi ghadi ee
mushqil hai aa padi

dekh tera qaidi laaya
pyaar ki ye hathhkadi ee
o meri phuljhadi
hmm
kisi ki le bahaane se
sharam ke jailkhaane se
kyun aazaad ho gaya
kyun aazaad ho gaya

main barbaad ho gaya
tu saiyad ho gaya

hato jaao tum to mere
peechhe hi padd gaye
baaton pe add gaye

teri aarzoo ke jhande
iss dil mein gadd gaye
ham to peele padd gaye
hatt
padenge sar per jab dande
to bhaagoge lekar jhande
ke main barbaad ho gaya
haaye naashaad ho gaya

main barbaad ho gaya
main barbaad ho gaya

mehandi ban ke lag jaaunga
gori tere paanv mein
paayal ki chhaaon mein
dekho chali jaaungi main
apne hi gaanv mein
khushiyon ki chhaanv mein

haaye kahaan jaaoge o malika
tumhaare ghar ka har rasta
mujhe ab yaad ho gaya
mujhe ab yaad ho gaya
main hoon chhoti si ik bulbul
macha doongi chaman mein gul
ke tu saiyaad ho gaya

main barbaad ho gaya
tu saiyaad ho gaya

Chaandni raaten – Song No. 16
————————————–

” Ye chand ye sitaare ye raat yaad rakhnaa” from film ” La’al-e-Yaman ” (1956) is the song no. 16 of the series. No songs from this movie are posted in the blog yet, but two songs from the 1933 movie of the same name are presented. This song is written by Kaifi Azmi and composed by A R Qureshi also known as Ustad Allah Rakkha. The recording is not really up to the mark and sounding older than the year of the film. The music is also sounding very period in this qawwali style composition.

When ever I plan a series, the first thing to look at is the Rafi excel sheet. So this song was also in the original list of ‘Chaandni Raaten’ songs, at the start of the series.

I go looking for typical “chaandni raaten” songs and I find some typical ” chaandni raaten” songs and when I find such typical songs, am forced to repeat myself call them typical “chaandni raaten” songs. And typically, the singers of this typical “chaandni raaten” song are Mohammad Rafi and Asha Bhosle singing in the typical fashion of the 50’s. Typically this should be the limit of the typical creative writing, :-) but there is more typicality. Being so typical it is unlikely that I will start a series where some typical Rafi songs will not feature.

Presenting this archtypical Rafi-Asha duet song.

Raja, one of the regulars of this blog needs no introduction. An enthusiastic blogger, who recently organised a get together of the regulars of this blog at his residence in Bangalore is a great fan of public tarnsport and he misses no opportunity on availing public transport. He fondly remembers his stay in New Delhi three decades ago when there used to be double decker buses in Delhi. Raja loved to ride on the upper deck and would love the feeling of being on top of the world.

The bus conductors on the other hand wanted commuters to remain on the bottom deck so that his workload was reduced.

Raja is no longer in Delhi and even double decker buses are no longer there in Delhi.

A few days back, Raja boarded a city bus (normal singer storied one) in Bangalore. Here are Raja’s experiences on that bus in his own words:

So there was this sweet lady conductor today in the bus. Asked me “Uncle, yelli? (kidhar?)

I told her, she gave me a ticket.

Then another guy got into the bus. A much older guy than me. She asked him “Anna, yelli? (Anna = elder brother).

Now, I’ve been called Uncle many times – and I don’t mind it at all – but ye kahaan ka logic hai? Humko Uncle aur usko Anna? :)

Raja’s friends expressed their sympathies telling him that it was the kamaal of his “Safed baal”.

“Haan, wohi hoga. I have even been called “Dadaji”..and that, already 15 years ago! :)”- Raja stated.

Then people offered some other theories, viz. the other guy could well be younger than Raja, or may be the bus conductor actually called that other guy as “grandfather” (“Anna” being “grandfather” in the bus conductor’s language).

Another explanation offered was ” tum English type lag rahe hoge issliye uncle bola, nahin toh anna toh sabhi ko bol dete hain na? wo aadmi tumse zayada desi lag raha hoga. “

Others jumped in the bandwagon-“haan Raja to poora imported lagta hai!”

And then others told him that getting adressed as Uncle/aunt at this stage was natural and it was in fact a compliment. He was told that “At least in the south, I’ve noticed that people who look well-dressed, a bit westernised, educated and/or well-groomed are addressed as uncle or aunty. It has got only slightly do with age. What earlier was Sir (pronounced Sar) in Karnataka has become uncle and for women, aunty.
So, take it as a compliment Raja!
I’m glad to see that there are lady conductors in the bus in Bangalore. Good!”

My take on the matter was “Yes, There being lady conductors is Bangalore buses in more interesting news than the news of Raja being addressed as Uncle. :)”

We will never know how Raja would have liked to be addressed by the lady conductor. Maybe Raja would have preferred “jaaneman, yelli?” :)

To bad that it was not a movie, otherwise we could have expected a good song situation under such circumstances. Imagine the lady conductor singing a song like “Yelahanka to Jalahalli dus dus mein, ab raaja aaya hai meri bus mein”, or let us imagine two lady bus conductors comparing notes- “Na koi Teri bus mein Julie, Na koi meri bus mein”. :)

And being a movie, we could expect the two parties to meet again and again and burst into duets at the drop of the hat.

Here is one likely duet song for the occasion. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. Noor Dewasi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Bipin Babul.

The song is picturised on Shyama and Premnath. Name of the movie- “Bus Conductor” of course ! :)

“Miss Mala”(1954) was produced and directed by Jayant Desai. The movie had Kishore Kumar, Vyjyanti Mala, Jeewan, Bipin Gupta, Satyanarayan, Samson, Umakant, Shakuntala Bai, Neera, with guest appearances by Agha and Manhar Desai.

Six songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the seventh song from “Miss Mala”(1954). This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. Anjum Jaipuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Chitragupta.

HFGK mentions this song as one song, but the song is picturised in the movie in two parts. Bulk of the song is utilised in part I as a stage performance song whereas a few lines of the song is used as the movie ending song.

I am unable to identify the actor lip syncing in Rafi’s voice. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the actor. In part II, it is Kishore Kumar who lip syncs in Rafi’s voice. Vyjyanti Mala lip syncs in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in both parts.

The song appears to be inspired in all respects by the “Albela”(1951) song Shaam dhale khidki taley tum seetee bajaana chhod do

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

Here is the fourth song from the movie. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle, Rafi and chorus. P L Santoshii is the lyricist. Music is composed by O P Nayyar.

It is a dance song which is the theme song of the movie as well.

Lots of actors sing and dance in the picturisation of this song. The video quality is quite poor. From whatever I can make out, it appears that Shashikala and Agha lip sync in the voices of Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. I request our knowledgeable readers to confirm/ refute my identification.

The movie ends with this song, so the song is a movie ending song as well.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

Song-Sabse bada hai jee sabse bada hai (Sabse Bada Rupaiyya)(1955) Asha Bhonsle, Rafi, Lyrics-P L Santoshi, MD-O P Nayyar
Chorus

Lyrics (Provided by Nitin Shah)

sabse bada hai ji
sabse bada hai
bada hai rupaiya re
sabse bada hai
magar sabse jhootha
jhootha rupaiya re
sabse bada hai ji
sabse bada hai
bada hai rupaiya re
sabse bada hai
magar sabse jhootha
jhootha rupaiya re

rupaiye ke peechhe bhaage bhagode
bhagte hain jaise race ke ghode
qasmen bhi todin vaade bhi tode
arre laanat hai ham par ke nikle nigode
nikle nigode

rupaiye ne kya kya gul na khilaaye
rupaiye ne kya kya gul na khilaaye
apne bhi hone lage thhe paraaye
noton ka toofaan uthha itna bhaari
noton ka toofaan uthha itna bhaari
lagi doobne thhi mohabbat ki naiya
mohabbat ki naiya
sabse bada hai ji sabse bada hai
bada hai rupaiya re
sabse bada hai magar sabse jhootha
jhootha rupaiya re

jab dekha ke note hain jhoothe
kitnon ke dil toote
jab dekha ke note hai jhoothe
kitnon ke dil toote
mera toota tera toota
inka toota unka toota
sabka toota sabka toota
sabka toota sabka toota

par bada maza to usne loota
jisne samjha maaya jhoothi
daulat jhoothi paisa jhootha
jhootha rupaiya re
sabse bada hai ji sabse bada hai
bada hai rupaiya re
sabse bada hai magar sabse jhootha
jhootha rupaiya re

note hain jhoothe bilkul jhoothe
kaun kahe ye note hain jhoothe

sach poochho wo note hai jhoothe
baabuji wo note hain jhoothe
wo kaun
jinki bhari tijori babu
jinki hoti chori baabu
jinse saari duniya badle
thaali badle lota badle
chappal badle joota badle
sahab badle baniya badle
saadhu badle gunga badle
jinse saari duniya badle
wo hain jhoothe
wo hain jhoothe

wo hain jhoothe lekin babu
ye hain sachhe
ye hain sachhe
arre kaise sachhe
are kaise sachhe

inhin noton ne aankhon ka parda uthhaya
inhin noton ne aankhon ka parda uthhaya
inhin noton ne hamko ye rasta dikhaaya
inhin noton se hamko hai phir se milaaya
inhi noton ne hamko ye sabak sikhaaya
sabak sikhaaya
sabse bada hai ji sabse bada hai
bada hai rupaiya re
sabse bada hai magar sabse jhootha
jhootha rupaiya re
sabse bada hai ji sabse bada hai
bada hai rupaiya re
sabse bada hai magar sabse jhootha
jhootha rupaiya re

“Bhaagam Bhaag” (1956) was a light hearted comedy movie. It was produced and directed by Bhagwan. The movie had Kishore Kumar, Bhagwan, Smriti Biswas, Badri Prasad, Shashikala, Kumkum, Tiwari etc in it. In this movie, everyone played characters who were named the same as their actual names. For instance, Kishore Kumar played a character named Kishore and Bhagwan played a character named Bhagwan. The same was the case with other actors too. So if someone like me did not know an actor called Badri Prasad, then I would be able to identify him by watching this movie because he was named Badri Prasad in this movie. :)

The movie had ten songs in it. Nine of them have been discussed in the past.

Here is the tenth and final song from the movie. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by O P Nayyar.

The song is picturised on Bhagwan (playing Bhagwan) and Smriti Biswas (playing Smriti). :)

With this song, “Bhaagam Bhaag”(1956) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Song-Tere teer e nazar ka balam dil nishaana hua(Bhaagam Bhaag)(1956) Singers-Asha Bhonsle, Rafi, Lyrics- Majrooh O P Nayyar

Lyrics

tere teere nazar ka balam
dil nishaana hua
tere mere muhabbat ka aaj
ik fasaana hua
naam sunte hi tera sanam
main deewaana hua
tujhko dil mein basaaye huye ik zamaana hua

dil nishaana hua
naam sunte hi tera sanam
main deewaana hua

chheena mera jigar
toone o dilruba
naam sunte hi tera sanam
main deewaana hua

tere teere nazar ka balam
dil nishaana hua

mil gaye ho to phir ab na hona juda
mere saanson mein aa
mere dil mein sama
mil gaye ho to phir ab na hona juda
mere saanson mein aa
mere dil mein sama
koi hamse sune
haaye yaa cheez hai teri zaalim ada
o tere teere nazar ka balam
dil nishaana hua
naam sunte hi tera sanam
main deewaana hua

jhoomta hoon tera jaam e ulfat piye
bhool baithha zamaane ko tere liye
jhoomta hoon tera jaam e ulfat piye
bhool baithha zamaane ko tere liye
bhoolna na mujhe
ab deewaane ko hai
ik tera aasraa
naam sunte hi tera sanam
main deewaana hua
tujhko dil mein basaaye huye ik zamaana hua

tere teere nazar ka balam
dil nishaana hua
tere mere muhabbat ka aaj
ik fasaana hua

Hullo to all in Atuldom

Sunday was a learning experience. I visited the encyclopaedia of atuldom. I realised that the wealth of knowledge is not only because he has seen Indian movies but has also read about them. And I was amazed by the system he uses for writing a post. I took the liberty of asking for his collection of The HFGK. And I felt humbled that we in atuldom are celebrating 10900 and here is someone who has volumes on all the songs from the time Hindi films were born. But of course Hamrazji’s work of passion is different from what Atul has set out to do. So that brings us back to the main question. Is atulsongaday atulji’s passion or a vividh bharati for all of us where we send our farmaishes. I have lost count of the number of times I have raised this question. And Atulji, very sportingly just posts one more of our farmaishes :).

So coming back to encyclopaediaji…he has meticulously hand written notes for everything that he wants to share with us anaadis. Then he types them out to be posted. Also he has complete list of all the songs posted so far on ASAD. Something on the lines of what is there in the blog’s list of songs movie wise. Then he gave me a wonderful tip on how to use the information lying with me. (Hopefully he will not mind my giving out his modus operandi.) Of course I would have loved to spend hours with the guru. But when in mai desh (mother land), I always have numerous visits to be undertaken. So I took leave of guruji (I think this is a better name as compared to encyclopaedia, opinions are welcome).

Then as we were discussing our fellow atulites I remembered that I have had missed a very important personalities birthday on 14th feb. To top it, it was Venus’s 46th death anniversary yesterday. Hope I am very clear that I am talking of Madhubala.

So here is a song Madhubala ke naam. This is written by Qamar Jalalabadi and O P Nayyar is the music director. The song is sung by Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. The song is picturised on Raj Kapoor, Madhubala and others.

Song-Rik rik tik tik bum bum chik (Do Ustaad) (1959) Singer-Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Singer-Qamar Jalalabadi, MD-O P Nayyar
