“China Town”(1962) was produced and directed by Shakti Samant for Shakti films, Bombay. The movie had Shammi Kapoor, Shakila, Helen, Madan Puri, S N Bannerji, Mridula, Jeewankala, Gautam Mukherji, Kanu Roy, Shetty, Samson, Keshav, Khursheed, Tuntun, Rasheed Khan, Polson, F C Chang, Khatana, Fazal, Abdul, Lydia, Deendayal, Balaram, Ranjeet Sood, Shamsher Singh, Master aziz, Master Aslam, Aruna, Ram Reddy, Bina, Mauji Singh, B Bannerji, Bhattacharya, Minu, Mohan, Omi etc in it.

The movie had eight songs in it. Five of these songs have been covered in the blog.

Here is the suth song from “China Town”(1962) to appear in the blog. This song is a duet sung by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ravi.

The song is picturised as a car song on Shakila and Shammi Kapoor. Seeing that it is a Rafi song picturised on Shammi Kapoor, this song is a rather unknown song. Personally I had not heard this song before.

Song-Ye rang na chhotega ulfat ki nishaani hai (Chinatown)(1962) Singers-Asha Bhonsle, Rafi, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Ravi
Both

Lyrics

ye rang na chhootega
ulfat ki nishaani hai
ye rang na chootega
ulfat ki nishaani hai
kuchh tera fasaana hai
kuchh meri kahaani hai

ye rang na chhootega
ulfat ki nishaani hai
ye rang na chhootega

lehra ke uthha mausam
rut ban ke karaar aayi
lehra ke utha mausam
rut ban ke karaar aayi
aayi to magar kitna
tarsa ke bahaar aayi

tarsa ke bahaar aayi
par kitni suhaani hai
ye rang na chhootega

aanken hain tumhaari
ya chhalka hua paimaana
aanken hain tumhaari
ya chhalka hua paimaana

apna to muhabbat mein dil ho gaya deewaana
ya hum hi deewaane hai
ya rut hi deewaani hai

ye rang na chhootega

dekho na bhula dena
in pyaar ki waadon ko
dekho na bhula dena
in pyaar ki waadon ko
tum bhi na badal dena
chaahat ke iraadon ko

jab preet lagi tumse
kuchh maine bhi thhaani hai
ye rang na chhootega
ulfat ki nishaani hai
kuchh tera fasaana hai
kuchh meri kahaani hai

ye rang na chhootega
ulfat ki nishaani hai
ye rang na chhootega

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 8
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

‘क’ – कहिए कैसा मिज़ाज है आपका

ना जाने कौन ये आवाज़ देता है॰ ॰ ॰

The sounds of his voice keep reverberating in the valleys of the mind – the voice that carries a million musical memories of an entire lifetime, unforgettable.

Today’s song in this series is a delightful exchange of young hearts in love. The film is ‘Salaam Memsaab’ from 1961. On screen, the song is performed by a very young Subiraj, and a very enchanting Kum Kum. It is always such a joy to watch Kum Kum on screen with that scintillating smile and the twinkle in the eyes that goes along with it. In a chirpy naughty mood, her expressions and her movements are such a pleasure to see. However, in this clip, I must say, her dance movements are just the typical signature dance steps of Bhagwan. Now Bhagwan is also in this film, and it is a matter of conjecture whether he had some say in the choreography and songs picurization. Maybe he did, the steps in this clip are so very much Bhagwan.

The film is produced by an entity that is called the Young Technicians Unit – Baria Films, and is directed by K Parvez. The star cast is listed as

Kumkum, Subiraj, KN Singh, Sheikh, Bhagwan, Meena, Wasi Khan, Arvind Kumar, Ahmed Patni, S Malik, Bir, and Naazi. Music for this film is composed by Ravi. The eight songs in this film are written by four songwriters – Asad Bhopali, SH Bihari, Priyadarshi and Qamar Jalaalabaadi. This particular song is from the pen of Asad Bhopali.

The singing voices are of Rafi Sb and Asha Bhosle. The song is a lover’s tete-a-tete with the young Subiraj pursuing Kum Kum. At first, he is responsible for making her fall, then he tries to appease her by asking her “कहिए कैसा मिजाज है॰॰॰”.

A fun song, that is also such a wonderful melodious memory from the radio listening days. Listen and enjoy.

Song – Kahiye Kaisa Mizaaj Hai Aapka (Salaam Memsaab) (1961) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Asad Bhopali, MD – Ravi
Mohammed Rafi + Asha Bhosle

Lyrics

kahiye kaisa mizaaj hai aapka
hum se kya vaasta hai janaab ka
arey arey aap to bigadne lagey
nahin nahin aapko samajhne lagey
o kahiye kaisa mizaaj hai aapka
hum se kya vaasta hai janaab ka
arey arey aap to bigadne lagey
nahin nahin aapko samajhne lagey
o kahiye kaisa mizaaj hai aapka

jis din se pyaar hua
dil beqaraar hua
jeena dushvaar hua teri kasam
jis din se pyaar hua
dil beqaraar hua
jeena dushvaar hua teri kasam
yun na sataaya karo
dil na jalaaya karo
kasmen na khaaya karo jhoothe sanam
tera deewaana hoon teri kasam
kya bharosa hai mardon ki zaat ka
kya iraada hai aakhir janaab ka
arey arey aap to bigadne lagey
nahin nahin aapko samajhne lagey
kahiye kaisa mizaaj hai aapka

nazron ne jaan liya
dil ne pehchaan liya
lo hum ne maan liya apna tumhen
nazron ne jaan liya
dil ne pehchaan liya
lo hum ne maan liya apna tumhen
mushkil se baat bani
dil ko bas hai ye khushi
tumne samjha to sahi apna mujhe
arey arey aap to bigadne lagey
nahin nahin aapko samajhne lagey
o kahiye kaisa mizaaj hai aapka

ye rut ye pyaara samaan
dil ki duniya hai jawaan
ye baaten roz kahaan jaane wafaa
ye rut ye pyaara samaan
dil ki duniya hai jawaan
ye baaten roz kahaan jaane wafaa
aise mein dil bhi mera
masti mein jhoom utha
halka halka sa nasha chhaane laga
ab zindagi ka mazaa aane laga
kahiye kaisa mizaaj hai aapka
hum se kya vaasta hai janaab ka
arey arey aap to bigadne lagey
nahin nahin aapko samajhne lagey
kahiye kaisa mizaaj hai aapka
hum se kya vaasta hai janaab ka

The song is picturised on Rishi Kapoor and Mausami Chatterji as a horse riding song on snow.

The lyrics of this song were sent to me by nahm as far back as in 2011 and I had planned to cover this song at that time only. I do not know how this song managed to remain unposted all these years. It was lying in the drafts folder of the blog for all these days.

Better late than never. With this song, “Do Premi”(1980) makes its debut in the blog.

“Qurbaani”(1980) was produced and directed by Feroz Khan. The movie had Feroz Khan, Vinod Khanna, Zeenat Aman, Amjad Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Aruna Irani, Amrish Puri and Kadar Khan etc in it.

The movie had five songs in it. Four of these songs have been covered in the past. Here are the details of the four songs from “Qurbaani” (1980) that have already been showcased in the blog:-

Song Title

Post No.

Post Date

Ham tumhen chaahte hain aise 3082 6-Oct-10
Aap jaisa koi mein zindagi mein aaye MD-Biddu 7349 15-Jan-13
Qurbaani qurbaani qurbaani Allah ko pyaari hai qurbaani 11419 25-Sep-15
Laila main Laila 14222 31-Mar-18

The movie was “inspired” from a curry western Italian/German movie called “The Master touch”(1974). The movie has impressive background music by Ennio Moricone whose background music in movies like “The Good, The Bad and the Ugly”, “For a few dollars more” etc are extremely popular till today.

“Qurbaani” (1980) makers looked elsewhere for inspiration for the songs of the movie. While Kalyanji Anandji “arranged” or created music for four songs, as the case may be. one “western” song was composed by Biddu and that song turned out to be one of the freakest hits in the history of HFM. The creaters of this song, viz Nazia Hassan and Biddu could never replicate that success again.

Here is the fifth and final song from “Qurbaani” (1980) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. Indeewar is the lyricist. Music is by Kalyanji Anandji.

While listening to the lyrics of the songs of this movie, I realised that the lyrics writing of Indeewar has not received the credit that he deserved. For instance, he has given a routine Hindi film song situation such wonderful yet simple sounding lyrics that this song has gone on to become an all time classic.

The song is picturised on Zeenat Aman and Feroz Khan on the rugged and picturesque locations of Afghanistan. Some people like it for the picturisation, while some people like it for the singers. This song was one of the last few Rafi-Asha Bhonsle duets out of the several hundred songs that they sang together.

With this song, “Qurbaani” (1980) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Song-Kya dekhte ho soorat tumhaari (Qurbaani)(1980) Singers-Asha Bhonsle, Rafi, Lyrics-Indeewar, MD-Kalyanji Anandji

Lyrics

kya dekhte ho
kya dekhte ho
soorat tumhaari
kya chaahte ho
chaahat tumhaari
na hum jo keh den
keh na sakogi
lagti nahin thheek neeyat tumhaari
kya dekhte ho
soorat tumhaari
kya chaahte ho
chaahat tumhaari
na hum jo keh den
keh na sakogi
lagti nahin thheek neeyat tumhaari
kya dekhte ho
soorat tumhaari

roz roz
roz roz dekhoon tujhe
nayi nayi lage mujhe
angon mein amrit ki dhaara
tere angon mein amrit ki dhaara

dil lene ki dhang teri
seekhi koi rang tere
baaton ka andaaz pyaara
teri baaton ka andaaz pyaara
sharaarat se chehra chamakne laga kyoon
sharaarat se chehra chamakne laga kyoon

yeh rang laayi hai sangat tumhaari
kya dekhte ho
soorat tumhaari

socho zara
socho zara
jaan-e-jigar
beetegi kya tumpe agar
humko jo koi chura le
tumse humko jo koi chura le
kisi ne jo tumhen chheena
naamumkin hai uska jeena
kaise nazar koi daale
tumpe kaise nazar koi daale

pyaar pe apne itna bharosa
pyaar pe apne itna bharosa
itna mohabbat mein fitrat hamaari
kya dekhte ho
soorat tumhaari
kya chaahte ho
chaahat tumhaari
na hum jo keh den
keh na sakogi
lagti nahin thheek neeyat tumhaari
kya dekhte ho
soorat tumhaari

Lyrics

ghoonghat se kyun naina jhaanke

ab to na mil mil kar bichhdoge
chhaliya ye ikraar karo

The eighth and final song from “Mr India”(1961) is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi, alongwith chorus. Jaan Nisaar Akhtar is the lyricist. Music is composed by G S Kphli.

Only the audio of the song is available. It sounds like a dance song. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

With this song, “Mr India”(1961) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Today (10 march 2018) is the 100th day of the year 2018. We have been seeing one movie attaining YIPPEEHOOD everyday from the first day of the year 2018 . This streak lasted till 2 april 2018. I posted what I thought a “YIPPEE” song on 3 april 2018 as well, but it was pointed out the next day that the movie had more songs. So the YIPPEE streak came to an end, but that was not because of any lack of effort or motivation on our part. We have since resumed the one one YIPPEE movie per day routine once again.

There was one day (16 january 2018) when two YIPPEE movies had been covered. So in effect, we have YIPPEED 100 movies in 100 days of the year and the movie “Mr India”(1961) is the 100th YIPPEED movie of 2018. So this is another of those “artificial” centuries milestones that we often achieve in the blog these days. 🙂

That is not the only “artificial” century distinction with this post. There is another. This movie becomes the 100th YIPEED movie in the blog whose title begins with the letter M. 🙂

Series of Rafi songs-Rafi with music directors
—————————————————————-
(Pal do pal ka saath)-MD composing just one Rafi song
——————————————————————-
Part II-Chaand Pardesi
—————————-

If one thinks that posting “blog century” songs is quite a straight forward matter then think again. Though we have posted as many as 142 blog century posts, hardly any of them were easy picks. I had to think hard and long before finding songs befitting the occasion.

As the number of centuries mounted, we began to combine those blog centuries with other special occasions, viz. artist century, contributor century, artist anniversaries etc.

The post under discussion marks the 143rd century for the blog. In other words, it is the song post number 14300 for the blog.

I just mentioned that selecting “blog century” songs is not a trivial matter. Let me describe the thought process/ behind the scene activities that took place before I settled on this particular song as the “blog century” song.

First thing first. I had made up my mind that I would author this post. The reason was simple. I realised that our other contributors, including the usual century author Sudhir Jee were hard pressed for time these days. So I decided that I needed to write this post.

Many of our special posts including century posts have tended to appear towards the midnight, which may be prime time for TV but not for the blog. Blog prime time is day time on a weekday, so I made up my plan that this article should appear by morning today (24 april 2018) which happens to be tuesday.

When the day began, the tally of posts stood at 14297, so it meant that three posts needed to be posted, including two posts prior to the century post.

Did I have any song in mind for the “blog century” post ?

Yes, I had. It was a rare song, and quite a remarkable song. I had discovered this song a few months ago and I had noted down its lyrics as well. It was a long song and noting down the lyrics took a good amount of time. I had earmarked this song as a special song, to be covered as a “blog century” post or any such occasion.

This song had another qualification. I had begun my series of Rafi songs called (Pal do pal ka saath)-MD composing just one Rafi song. I had begun this series by aiming to cover those music directors who composed just one song with Rafi. I had decided that these songs would be special occasion songs in the blog. The first (and so far only) song in the series was composed by Arun Raghavan. I had combined this song to mark several special occasions, viz. that song was the 2800th Rafi song in the blog and the movie, which got introduced in the blog with the song was the 3800th movie covered in the blog.

My planned song that I had earmarked also fitted the same bill. It was also the only Rafi song composed by that music director.

With time, I realised that this song could be combined to mark another extremely rare occasion which few regulars may be able to guess. It could become the 500th Rafi-Asha Bhonsle duet in the blog !

So I had silently made sure that the tally of Rafi-Asha Bhonsle duet had gradually inched upto the 499 mark in the blog. 🙂

So, when the time arrived to post the 14300th song article, I had every thing covered. Or that is what I thought.

When I began to search for this song in my hard disk, I was unable to locate it. I had noted down its lyrics spending several hours. I was sure it was there somewhere but where ? I managed to locate the video in my hard disk but not the lyrics.

OK, I will have to note the lyrics again, I thought.

When I began to listen to the song, I received another jolt. This song that I was remembering as a Rafi-Asha Bhonsle duet had another voice in it. So my carefully laid plans got thrown out of the window immediately.

What to do now ? Now I needed to search for songs composed by other composers who worked with Rafi in just one song. This list is fortunately very much there in my excel sheet, and show I immediately began to search for Rafi songs composed by these one Rafi song composers.

The songs that I located were just solo Rafi songs, and they somehow did not sound worthy of being the blog century song. Nevertheless, one such Rafi song, after repeated listening began to grow upon me and I decided that this song was going to be the song for the occasion. So I noted down the lyrics of the song.

On just a whim, I decided to check up another solo Rafi song composer. And guess what ? This song was very much a Rafi-Asha Bhonsle duet !

When I listened to the song, I realised that it was an suitable replacement for the song that I had originally planned and which turned out to have more than two voices.

So, I got a song which was the only occasion when this music director got to utlise Rafi’s voice in his compositions. And this song happens to be the 500th Rafi-Asha Bhonsle duet in the blog.

This song in question is from a forgotten movie called “Ban Maanush”(1979). It was directed by Kamram Khan for O K Films, Bombay. The movie had Dara Singh, Padma Khanna, Kamran, Uma Dhawan, Mohan Choti, Sundar, Ratan Mala, Monal, Rajan Kapoor, Habeeb, Hamid Khan, Sawan, Chaachi, Sabir, Ramjanam singh, Danny Junior (new discovery), Jagdep (special appearance) etc in it.

“Ban Maanush”(1979) had three songs in it. This song under discussion is the first song from the movie to appear in the blog. So “Ban Maanush”(1979) makes its debut with this rare and special song.

The video of this song is very much available. One can see that the song is picturised as a qawwaali song where a gentleman and a lady assisted by their respective teams of chorus sing this song.

Good qawwaali’s in Hindi movies always have great lyrics in them. And this qawwaali is no exception. Farooque Kaiser is done very well in penning the lyrics of this song. Music is composed by Chaand Pardesi.

Qawwaali is one genre of song where picturisation plays as important a role as the lyrics is savouring and enjoying the song. The saying “the song is better heard than seen” does not apply to qawwaalis.

Qawwaalis were normally seen in muslim social movies. In these movies, qaawwaali are one occasion where the two genders are seen interacting with each other in full public view. It is one occasion where the two genders openly use amorous terms and the public (otherwise quite conservative) do not mind. I think this kind of qawwaalis have been invented in Hindi movies and I do not think amir Khusro, the creator of Qawwaali might have imagined that the qawaalis would serve this pupropse, viz helping the two genders (who otherwise remain segregated) to interact with each other and express their feelings with each other.

To help avoid embarrassment that may result if one a male and a female were to sing the song, the lead singers are supported by friends of the same gender to lend moral support by singing in chorus.

Another thing that one notices in these filmy qawwaalis are that the lyrics of this songs are quite liberal and broadminded and not at all conservative and narrow minded. One is readily reminded of the epic qawwaali of “Barsaat Ki Raat”(1960) that covers lots and lots of topics viz. Krishna, Radha, Meera, Buddha, Maseeh etc.

The qawwaali under consideration is a nice “expression of love” genre of qawwaali. I can see that Padma Khanna lip syncs in Asha Bhonsle’s song, but I am unable to identify the gentleman who lip syncs in Rafi’s voice.

This qawwaali is a forgotten gem from my college days which I had never heard before.

In summary, here are the salient features of this song post:-

1. This song is the only Rafi song that music director Chaand Pardesi composed in his career. And what a superb song it is. This article is our way of honouring the one Rafi song music director Chaand Pardesi.

2. This song is the 500th duet song sung by Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. What to say about this feat. These two legends have easily sung the most number of duets songs ever. I have not yet counted the number of duets sung by them, but I have read an estimate this puts this figure to over 800 ! The second most prolific duet singing pair happens to be Rafi-Lata pair. They are a “distant” second with “just” 400 plus duets. 🙂

3. This song is the 14300th song of the blog. The previous blog century was achieved on 23 march 2018. So this century has taken 32 days.

There was a time when we used to clock centuries in 16 days. We may have slowed down, and in the course of this century we even had a dot day, but at least the musical bandwagon is still on the move. And this matters a lot.

We are on the verge of several landmarks in addition to the usual blog century landmarks. Lots of artists are closing in to their century and multiple century marks. Even a regular contributor is stuck on 199 (hint ! hint ! 🙂 ). So there are lots of exciting and interesting events ahead of us.

When one considers this series (pal do pal ka saath), this was only the second episode. There are more music directors with justone Rafi song to their credit. Their time would also come and we will honour them too with similar special write ups.

As for now, I take this opportunity to thank one and all for their continuous support for nearly ten years. That reminds me, we are on the verge of completing ten years in another four months. Here is hoping that this musical bandwagon will continue to roll on and on and in the process we will find ourselves acquainted with lots and lots of great musical gems, and some of them for the first time.

This special song may well be the first time many of our music lovers will get to listen to this song. Here is this wonderful song from the golden era of HFM. Enjoy !

Blog Day : 3601 Post No. : 14373

“Naag Jyoti” (1963) was directed by Shantilal Soni for Swastik Films Production, Bombay. This mythological movie had Mahipal, Anita Guha, Sunder, Ratnamala, Rajen Haksar, Khurshid etc in it.

The movie had six songs in it. One song from the movie has been covered in the past.

Here is the second song from “Naag Jyoti” (1963) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. Bharat Vyas is the lyricist. Music is composed by Sardar Malik. Sardar Malik last appeared in the blog on blog day number 3302 (date 2 august 2017). So he appears in the blog again on day number 3601, viz. after the passage of 299 days. 🙂

For statistically minded music lovers, this “tall promise” song (tera mera pyaar amar hoga) is the 501st Rafi-Asha Bhonsle duet in the blog.

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 15
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

‘झ’ – झुक के ज़मीन चूम रहा आसमान ॰ ॰ ॰

बस्ती बस्ती पर्वत पर्वत गाता जाये बंजारा  ॰ ॰ ॰

Over the hills and through the valleys; on lonely roads and barren deserts; be it crowded cities or a lonely boatman – there is always a song, and your voice with it, don’t have to search far. . .

– – – – –

What a gem of discovery this song is. I can’t recall having heard it earlier. The film is ‘Dhoop Chhaaon’ from 1954. The film itself is not so unfamiliar – three songs of this film are already showcased on our blog. Although of course it is lesser known than its more famous same name predecessor from 1935. Btw, there is another film by the same name in 1977 also.

But this song – such a melodious creation it is, and a surprise that it has remained obscure for such a long time.

The 1954 ‘Dhoop Chhaaon’ is produced by MO Suhel for the banner of Suhel Art Productions, Bombay and is directed by SM Raza. Geet Kosh lists 9 songs for this film, all composed by Aziz Hindi. Four song writers are listed – Manohar Khanna, Jaan Nisar Akhtar, Arshi Ajmeri and Khaawar Zamaa. This song is from the pen of Jaan Nisar Akhtar. An interesting aside, the name of assistant music director is listed as Madan Sachdev. I wonder if this is the same person as S Madan, who gave music for the 1960 film ‘Batwaara’. I request other knowledgeable friends and readers to please comment on this observation.

The star cast is listed as Shyama, Bharat Bhushan, Agha, NA Ansari, Krishna Kumari, Shameem, Mumtaz, Maqbool, A Roshan, Ahmed, and S Nazeer. And I just recalled something, and confirmed with the anniversaries list. 12 June, that is this past Tuesday, was the birth anniversary of Shyama. And yesterday, 14th June, was the birth anniversary of Bharat Bhushan. Given that they are the lead pair in this film, it is more than likely that this duet song is picturized on them. Earlier this week I was thinking of doing a post on Shyama, but could not get to it. This song turns out to be a bonus in that respect, reviving the memories of these two stalwart artists of Hindi cinema.

A lovely melodious song that is seems to have missed the attention of music lovers. Since I traced out this song on YT, I have heard it many times and simply do not seem to be getting over it. I am sure you will enjoy too.

Song – Jhuk Ke Zameen Choom Raha Aasmaan  (Dhoop Chhaaon) (1954) Singer – Asha Bhosle, Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – Jaan Nisar Akhtar, MD – Aziz Hindi
Mohammed Rafi + Asha Bhosle

Lyrics

aaa aaaaaa
aaaaaa aaaa aaaaaaaaa
aaaaa aaaaaaaa aaaa aa

jhuk ke zameen choom raha aasmaan
aaj galey mil rahe dono jahaan
phir kyon na milen kyon na hum saajna
phir kyon na milen kyon na hum saajna
jhuk ke zameen choom raha aasmaan
aaj galey mil rahe dono jahaan
phir kyon na milen kyon na hum saajna
phir kyon na milen kyon na hum saajna

dekho sajan kaisi har shai pe khushi chhaayee hai
baat mohabbat ki ban aayi hai
aaj miley do dil
milne ki ghadi aayi hai
kaisi haseen aaj ki tanhaai hai
jhoom raha kab se umangi samaan
choom rahi phool ka munh titliaan
phir kyon na milen kyon na hum saajna
phir kyon na milen kyon na hum saajna
jhuk ke zameen choom raha aasmaan
aaj galey mil rahe dono jahaan
phir kyon na milen kyon na hum saajna
phir kyon na milen kyon na hum saajna

nazron mein lehren hain
haathon mein tera haath hai
mera jahaan aaj mere saath hai
kitni jawaan kaisi rangeen mulaqaat hai
saath mein armaanon ki baraat hai
kehti huin pyaar bhari daastaan
beh rahin saagar ki taraf naddiyaan
phir kyon na milen kyon na hum saajna
phir kyon na milen kyon na hum saajna
jhuk ke zameen choom raha aasmaan
aaj galey mil rahe dono jahaan
phir kyon na milen kyon na hum saajna
phir kyon na milen kyon na hum saajna

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 19

‘ध’ – धीरे धीरे मोहब्बत जवां हो गई ॰ ॰ ॰

दुनिया में आया है तो फूल खिलाये जा॰ ॰ ॰

With your songs, and your deeds, that is what you accomplished in your life; that is the only memories we remember you by . . .

– – – –

Presenting the next episode in this series. The film is a standard family drama from the still sedate 1960s, and the fever of disco was still hidden in far horizons. The film is ‘Bhai Behen’ from 1969. The lead pair of Nutan and Sunil Dutt, with a better part of two decades of careers behind them, still look handsome and comely.

The film comes from the banner of Vikram Productions, Madras, and is directed by the renowned A Bhimsingh. The cast of actors is listed as Ashok Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Nutan, Pran, Padmini, Sulochana, Helen, Diwakar, Mukri, Bhalla, Shivraj, V Puranik, and Babbanlal. Quite a formulaic presentation this one must be – one look as the list of actors, and one can quickly surmise the type of roles that each actor would have played.

Seven songs and four songwriters are listed – Rajendra Krishan, SH Bihari, Pt Narendra Sharma and Hasrat Jaipuri. This song is from the pen of SH Bihari. Music is composed by the duo of Shanker Jaikishan.

The song is about coming of age and the blossoming of first love. The song plays out in the gardens and then on to the boat and the Bombay coastline. Both Sunil Dutt and Nutan are still fresh from their 1967 hit together – ‘Milan’. And a little further back, they also have more hits together – ‘Khandaan’ in 1965 and ‘Sujaata’ in 1960. Ah yes, also ‘Gauri’ from 1968.

Enjoy this lesser heard melody in the voices of Rafi Sb and Asha Bhosle.

Song – Dheere Dheere Mohabbat Jawaan Ho Gai  (Bhai Behan) (1969) Singer – Asha Bhosle, Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – SH Bihari, MD – Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

dheere dheere mohabbat jawaan ho gayi
baat itni badhi dastaan ho gayi
dheere dheere mohabbat jawaan ho gayi
baat itni badhi dastaan ho gayi
dheere dheere mohabbat jawaan ho gayi
baat itni badhi dastaan ho gayi

aap to jaane kya
mujhse keh kar miley
aap to jaane kya
mujhse keh kar miley
phool armaan ke dil mein itne khile
phool itne khile
husn ki zindagi gulsitaan ho dayi
baat itni badhi dastaan ho gayi
dheere dheere mohabbat jawaan ho gayi
baat itni badhi dastaan ho gayi

kar chuke aap jab
mujh se ahd e wafaa
kar chuke aap jab
mujh se ahd e wafaa
farq itna hi donon mein baaki raha
haaye baaki raha
aap dil ban gaye
aur main jaan ho gayi
baat itni badhi dastaan ho gayi
dheere dheere mohabbat jawaan ho gayi
baat itni badhi dastaan ho gayi

Blog Day : 3652 Post No. : 14506

Hullo to all atulites

In the euphoria to celebrate the blogs 10th anniversary with an appropriate post last week I missed out on a few anniversaries, occasions for which I always try and send a special song. I just realised that 18th July is the anniversary of another favourite. So here is a song for the occasion.

But I think, we can have a song featuring one in a movie in which the other is the main lead. The two actors I was thinking of combining are Rajesh Khanna and Sanjeev Kumar.

We missed Sanjeev Kumar’s birthday last week, he would have been 80 years on 9th July. And 18th July, it will be six years since Rajesh Khanna passed away. Both the actors were active around the same period. Both had their distinct styles in acting and also the kind of characters they enacted. They have appeared in about five films together – “Bandhan”, “Aap Ki Kasam”, “Chala Murari Hero Banane”, “Suraag” and I think Rajesh Khanna had a guest appearance in “Ram Tere Kitne Nam” which released about the time Sanjeev Kumar passed away. “Bandhan” was essentially a Rajesh Khanna movie where Sanjeev Kumar had a small role as a lawyer who fights a case for Rajesh Khanna. “Aap Ki Kasam” had Sanjeev Kumar play RK’s friend and neighbour and the eventual cause for the separation of Rk and Mumtaz. I don’t remember much about “Chala Murari Hero Banane” which was a movie about movies made by actor Asrani and I feel both RK and SK might have played themselves i.e. film stars, in guest appearances. That brings us to “Suraag” which is a Sanjeev Kumar movie where Rajesh Khanna is in a guest appearance in a song situation along with Tina Munim.

Remembering Rajesh Khanna with this song from “Suraag” which was produced by Jagmohan Mundhra and directed by Jag Mundhra and Ambrish Sangal. It had Sanjeev Kumar as husband to Gita Siddharath, playing a professor in Criminology and Parikshat Sahni playing a doctor who is the professor’s unmarried friend. Shabana Azmi plays Parikshat Sahni’s wife who is kidnapped on her way to New York. And then the movie’s mystery begins. The movie had music by Bappi Lahiri and written by Kaifi Azmi. The playback singers use in the movie were Mohd. Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Lata Mangeshkar, Bappi Lahiri and Kishore Kumar. Today’s song is a qawwali where Rajesh Khanna is on stage with Tina Munim and Gita Siddharath and Sanjeev Kumar are in the audience. Half way through the song Gita spots Shaban Azmi among the chorus girls and then the chase to find her picks up steam. I have seen this movie ages ago so I don’t remember if the song happens abroad or in India. The movie’s story transports the audience back and forth between India and America.

Here is the song which has Rafi and Asha giving playback alongwith male and female chorus.

“Lachak”(1951) was produced by Shriram Bohra and directed by M I Dharmsey for Shree Films, Bombay. This “social” movie had Geeta Bali, Amarnath, Kuldeep Kaur, Agha, Paro, Nayantara, Mukri, B M Vyas, Ramkumar, Shanti Sharma, Rukhsana, Zareena, Cecil, Ram Singh, Anand, Sheikh etc in it.

The movie had nine songs that were penned by seven lyricists ! Sheikh and Shreeram had penned two songs each, and the remaining five songs were penned by five different lyricists. These songs had the voices of at least six singers in them may be more.

One song has been covered in the past.

Here is the second song from “Lachak”(1951) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Pt Moiram.

Only the audio of the song is available. One YT uploader has uploaded the audio of this song where video of some other song from some other movie viz Parchhaain(1952) has been combined with this audio. I find such practices highly abhorrent as it misleads people.

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 21
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

‘ट’ – टूटे तो टूटे कोई दिल का सहारा ॰ ॰ ॰

– – – –

हम आस किए जाते, तुम पास नहीं आते
जाना था चले जाते, मिलने को चले आते

Everyone has to depart, someday. But this beseeching yoke of memories is now becoming an encumbering burden, that would probably be lightened only when I myself will depart.

– – – –

Presenting the next episode in this series. With close to half of Rafi Sb’s songs already posted on the blog, it is getting to be not an easy job to find songs to fit the requirements of the series. The alphabet letter for today is ‘ट’. When we scan the list of songs, we find a long list of songs starting with ‘t’, but then on closer review, one finds that majority of these ‘t’ songs are actually for the syllable ‘त’ –  as in ‘तुम’, ‘तुम्हारे’, ‘तेरा’ etc. There are very few songs that will start with the sound of ‘ट’.

But then, the going is still good. In fact I found two very good songs that satisfy this criteria; the second one I found fit quite well into another series, so I kept that aside for now.

This song is from the film ‘Lagan’ from 1971. Prior to this, two other films by this same title have been made – on in 1941 and the second in 1955. This is the third one. The film is produced under the banner of RRK Combine of Madras (now Chennai), and is directed by Ramanna. The star cast of this film includes Nutan, Ajay Sahni, Prem Chopra, Farida Jalal, Jagdeep, Bindu, Sulochana, Shabnam, Jaishri T, Nazir Hussain, Beerbal, Dubey and Kailash Chopra amongst others.

The film is a family drama – a story about a mother (role played by Sulochana) and her two sons (roles played by Prem Chopra and Ajay Sahni aka Parikshit Sahni). They relocate from Burma to Bombay, and a good Samaritan soul (role played by Nazir Hussain) in the form of a friend of the lady’s late-husband, hands them over substantial assets that are the share of the late-husband. Life is comfortable, only that the elder son (Prem Chopra) is wayward, and seeks extra-marital happiness. His wife is on way for a child, and he mistreats her. When this become known to the mother, she resolves to take action against her elder son, and to set him right.

The film has six songs, all written by Anand Bakshi, and tuned to music by Laxmikant Pyaarelal. Some of the songs are well heard memories from radio listening days. I picked this song for being a duet of Rafi Sb, but could not locate its video. I even scanned the film quickly, but it seems this song has been excluded from the film.

A duet in the voice of Rafi Sb and Asha Bhosle, it seems like a sad song of separation. As I scanned the film, I really could not make out where and how this song might fit into the storyline. If it were a solo sad song, then it could have fit in well. But a sad song presented as a duet seems to have no place in the film.

And so, presenting the next in this series, a song that is presents  a complaint, possibly from to a separated companion, or may be to the Almighty.

Song – Toote To Toote Koi Dil Ka Sahaara  (Lagan) (1971) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Anand Bakshi, MD – Laxmikant Pyaarelal
Rafi + Asha Bhosle

Lyrics

toote to toote koi dil ka sahaara
toote to toote koi dil ka sahaara
sahaara
ho hi raha hai phir bhi apna guzaara
ho hi raha hai phir bhi apna guzaara
roothe to roothe koi saathi hamaara
roothe to roothe koi saathi hamaara
hamaara
ho hi raha hai phir bhi apna guzaara

chaahe wafa kar chaahe kar bewafaai
chaahe wafa kar chaahe kar bewafaai
hum wo nahin jo denge teri duhaai
samjhe na samjhe zaalim tu ye ishaara
ishaara
ho hi raha hai phir bhi apna guzaara
toote to toote koi dil ka sahaara

ro ro ke phir na tera hum naam lenge
ro ro ke phir na tera hum naam lenge
baahen kisi ki bhi hum to thaam lenge
chhoote to chhoote hamse daaman tumhaara
tumhaara
ho hi raha hai phir bhi apna guzaara
toote to toote koi dil ka sahaara
roothe to roothe koi saathi hamaara
hamaara
ho hi raha hai phir bhi apna guzaara

Skipping the letters ‘ढ’ and ‘ण’
‘ढ’ – very few songs starting with this letter – either all used, or not applicable to this series.
‘ण’ does not have any song starting with this letter. Made a very interesting discovery as I browsed the Hindi dictionary for words starting with ‘ण’. There is only one word that starts with this letter. More interestingly, the letter itself has uses as a monosyllabic word, and has at least 10 meanings associated. Wow.

So we come to the letter ‘प’ today. And here is a wonderfully lovely song to go with it.

Today’s episode of this series brings up the second song of the film ‘Magic Carpet’ (1964), one of the ‘jaadugar sainyaan’ category of films, which were a popular genre in the 1950s and 60s. Although classified as B/C grade films, this category of films had their own distribution circuits, their own cinema halls where they were exhibited, and a very loyal coterie of audience who would not let go even one of this category without a visit.

The film is produced by AM Bhanji under the banner of Unique Pictures, Bombay and is directed by Babubhai Mistry. In the Geet Kosh, the cast of actors is listed as a very short list – Chitra, Azaad, BM Vyas and Bhagwan. The additional names of actors in this film, as taken from the casting credits in the film (that has now become thankfully available in public domain), are Bela Bose, Dalpat, Bimla Kashmiri, Kesri, Aroon, Maqbool, Radhe Shyam, Arvind Kumar, Mehroo Bai, Bakshi, Master Kishore, Kalla, Rafiq, Sandow, MD, Dawood, Amir, Musa, Julian, Khalil, Rehman, Salim, Zippy and Nagina.

Geet Kosh lists five songs for this film, penned by four poets, Jia Dehlavi, Shakeel Nomaani, Aish Farooqi and Farooque Kaiser. This song is written by Shakeel Nomaani. The music – by Ram Prasad. Yes, he is the same Ram Prasad Sharma, father of Pyaarelal (of Lxmikant Pyaarelal duo) and Ganesh. A brief about this music director is included in the post for the song “Antul Habi Ke Dekho Kabhi. . .“.

The singing voices are of Rafi Sb and Asha Bhosle. On screen, we see this song initiated by Bhagwan Dada, and a lady, whose name, if I may hazard a guess, is Bimla Kashmiri. I could be wrong, and I welcome inputs from more knowledgeable readers and friends, to correct or confirm this guess.

As the song progresses, we also see Azaad and Chitra in the clip. Majority of the performance of the song is by Bhagwan and Bimla Kashmiri. Azaad does not appear to lip sync any of the lines, but Chitra does take up lip syncing in one of the stanzas. So in all, the onscreen performance and mapping to the playback voices, is kind of mixed up in this song.

And so, this song brings up the 24th episode in this series. Listen and enjoy.

Song – Pyaar Ki Baaten Koi Na Jaane Yaad Teri Phir Aaye  (Magic Carpet) (1964) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Shakeel Nomaani, MD – Ram Prasad
Mohammed Rafi + Asha Bhosle

Lyrics

pyaar ki baaten koi na jaane
yaad teri phir aaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye

chaand sa chehra zulfen kaali
nazar na lag jaaye
wallah tauba meri haaye

dil ko teri tirchhi nazar ne
de diya hai sahaara
dil ko teri tirchhi nazar ne

jaao aji jhoothe kahin ke
tum na samjhe ishaara
hum shama aur tum parwaane
raaz na khulne paaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
chaand sa chehra zulfen kaali
nazar na lag jaaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye

kaabu ab dil par nahin hai
gaa rahi hain bahaaren
kaabu ab dil par nahin hai
gaa rahi hain bahaaren
jaise tujhe dulhan banaane
aa rahi hain bahaaren
door ka jalwa dil na maane
dil se nikle haaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
pyaar ki baaten koi na jaane
yaad teri phir aaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye

dekho mujhe aise na dekho
kya kahega zamaana
dekho mujhe aise na dekho
kya kahega zamaana
jaayen kahaan teri gali se
koi nahin hai thikaana
meri ada ke o deewaane
kaun tujhe samjhaaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
chaand sa chehra zulfen kaali
nazar na lag jaaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye

[Pray till when do we keep saying this, you have left and gone to a place where our voice does not reach you]

Skipping the letter ‘फ’ – no more songs available as applicable this series, starting with this letter. We come to ‘ब’.

This song from the obscure 1958 film ‘Sun To Le Haseena’, is an unfamiliar but a very lovely melody from the mind of S Mohinder. The film is a social drama coming from the famous Filmistan Studios, Bombay, and is directed by SP Bakshi. The Geet Kosh lists seven songs for this film. These seven songs are written by four songwriters – Saarshaar Sailiaani, Rahil Gorakhpuri, Anand Bakshi and Kaif Irfani. Today’s song is penned by Anand Bakshi. The music director is S Mohinder. Singing voices are of Rafi Sb and Asha Bhosle.

The cast of actors for this film is listed as Shashikala, Ravindra Kapoor, Agha, P Kailash, Badri Prasad, Randhir, Gulab, Sabita Chatterjee, Kanu Rai, Manju, Manohar Geer, Vitthal Das Panchotia, Madhu Apte, Ramlal, Leela, Bazid Khan, Rajeshwar Singh, Noor, Chandramohan, Pathak, Shantaram, Ravi Tandon, Sundar, Pal.

The leading man Ravindra Kapoor, younger brother of actor Kamal Kapoor, belongs to the Kapoor family, and is a first cousin of the Raj Kapoor generation. Folks will remember Nasir Hussain’s 1971 film ‘Caravan’. In this film, Jeetendra has two assistants / cleaners in his truck business. One is Junior Mehmood, and the other is Ravindra Kapoor. Ravindra Kapoor did not make a successful and popular career in Hindi films as a leading hero. However, he was quite a hit in Punjabi films in 1960s, and was a very popular leading man in that time. Some of his Punjabi films include ‘Sherni’  (1973), ‘Kankan De Ohle’  (1970), ‘Dupatta’  (1969), ‘Mukhra Chan Warga’  (1969), ‘Paun Baran’  (1969), ‘Punjabi Munda’  (1968), ‘Pind De Kuri’ (1967), ‘Khed Preetan Di’  (1967), ‘Neem Hakeem’  (1967), ‘Kunwari’  (1966), ‘Gabroo Desh Punjab De’  (1966), ‘Laiye Tod Nibhaiye’  (1966), ‘Shokan Mele Di’  (1965), ‘Saat Saaliyan’  (1964), ‘Mere Haaniyan’  (1963), ‘Pardesi Dhola’  (1959), ‘Chambe Di Kali’ etc.

From 1970 onwards, he is known better by the name Goga Kapoor. In Hindi films, as per the Geet Kosh listings (till 1980), he has appeared in 20 films (there are more films listed post 1980 when we check online), of which about 7 or 8 are as leading man, opposite to heroines like Shashikala, Ameeta and Indrani Mukherjee. In the remaining appearances, he is in character artist roles. In his later years, he was doing more villain and gangster type roles. He passed away in 2011.

[Note: With tongue in cheek, I reveal my personal connection to this clan. My mother’s second cousin on her maternal side of the family (from Simla) is/was married to Ravindra Kapoor. 🙂 ]

The song is sung by Rafi Sb and Asha Bhosle. It is a lively nok-jhonk exchange between lovers. Only the audio of this song is available, so it is not possible say who has sung it on screen. It could be Ravindra Kapoor and Shashikala, or it could be Agha, and one of the supporting ladies. I request other knowledgeable readers and friends to please add more information about this song and this film, if available.

Listen to this racy song. Peevesie’s Mom commented earlier today that “. . . josh which only Mohd. Rafi could bring to a song no matter who is lip syncing.” So true, the one and only Rafi Sb.
Enjoy this song.

Song – Baanke Teerandaaz Jaan Le Le Na Ho Naraaz  (Sun To Le Haseena) (1958) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Anand Bakshi, MD – S Mohinder

Blog Day : 3754 Post No. : 14719

Today’s song is the 3rd song from film Oonchi Haveli-55 to be discussed in the Blog. For the last 6-7 months, I have been discussing songs mostly from the decades of the 1930s and the 1940s. The last song from the 1950s that I discussed was on 3-3-2018, which for me was the 5th song from the decade of 1950s in this year. Looking back, I find that I had discussed a song from 1994 also in this year. Good songs, to whatever year they belong to, are my favourites. The only regret is that such songs have become few and far between. Good and meaningful Lyrics is another thing which has become scarce.

Today’s song is sung by Rafi. I strongly believe that God had given at least 10 different voices to this divine singer ! His special voice and style changed to suit the lip syncer on the screen and the song situation. His voice for Dilip Kumar was never the same as one he used for Johnny Walker.

Rafi came from a poor and humble background and had to struggle very hard to enter, sustain and reach the heights in Hindi Film Music. We all know that he came from a poor family but how his early life was spent is not known to many.

Punjab must be proud that two of its sons ruled Hindi cinema music for the first 50 years of its existence, which also happened to be its golden era. initially it was Saigal from 1933 to 1947 and then Mohd. Rafi-as if the baton was handed over by one statemate to another. Both started with humble beginnings and struggled hard to win their places in the History. Saigal, however, had less competition, but then the industry was also smaller. In case of Rafi, the competition was greater, but then the industry had also grown manifolds.

Born into a lower middle class Muslim family belonging to a non descript village in Punjab in 1924, Rafi did not have much education. It was confined to reading and writing in Urdu in Persian script. A little bit of multiplication, and his education was over. In leisure time, Rafi would take his and friends’ cattles for grazing- singing songs all the day.

Rafi did not have exposure to Radio until the beginning of Lahore Radio station in 1937. Of course wealthy people had their gramophones and he would listen to Indubala and Kamla Jharia songs coming from the Havelis and in the Bazaar area. Rafi sang many folk songs.

His father decided to shift to Lahore- 50 miles away, for better earning. Like most Amritsaris, he too was an expert in cooking. He opened a Dhaba and soon did well. Later on he called Rafi to Lahore in 1941 Rafi got a job in a Hair cutting saloon. Whole day he would do people’s shaving, while singing songs. His customers were happy. One day, Programme Director of Lahore A.I.R. Mr. Jeewan lal Mattoo was passing by and he heard Rafi’s singing. Impressed with his enchanting voice, sweetness, range and tonal quality, he shocked Rafi with his offer. Rafi gave his audition next day and passed with flying colours. From March 1943, Mohd.Rafi became a Radio singer, at 35 rupees per song. ( six months later Surinder kaur also joined Lahore Radio).

After hearing his voice on Radio, Music Director Shyam sunder called him to sing in his Punjabi film ” Gul Baloch”. Before coming to Lahore, Rafi was married to his cousin, but his Father in law had told him that his wife will join him only after he starts earning decently. Even after that single song in a film, Rafi continued his shaving job in the saloon. Meanwhile Mr. Mattoo helped him to learn classical music. Also Master Inayat Hussain gave him training. Another teacher was Budh Singh Taan. Noorjehan, Umrao Zia and Zeenat begum were seniors to Rafi in Lahore, but they knew each others. He took training from Bhai Samund Singh and Bhai Santa Singh of local Gurudwaras. Rafi was a saintly person and a true Namazi, doing 5 times Namaz daily.

Rafi’s wife came to him after he became a Radio artiste. He had a large friends circle, who used to gather in his house. There were many Hindi and Punjabi films made in Lahore, but none of the composers thought of Rafi as a singer. Pt. Amarnath and Ghulam Hyder liked his voice and knew his talent. While shifting to Bombay, Ghulam Hyder invited Rafi to join him. Even from Bombay he sent him 2 calls. Finally on his second call, Rafi decided to shift to Bombay, lock stock and barrel, in 1945. In Bombay, till Jugnu-47 happened, Rafi sang few songs in films, but he made his living by singing in private Mehfils of wealthy Punjabis of Bombay.

Story of Rafi after Jugnu-47 is known widely. I just wanted to highlight his less known early days, before coming to Bombay. Some of this information is used from an article by H.S.Aujla in Apnaorg.

May be, because of his humble background and a struggle before he succeeded, he always had a soft corner for struggling composers. Unlike some other famous singers, he was always ready to help such composers, even if the money offered was below par. During his peak period also, poor B and C grade composers could approach Rafi with a request to sing their songs and Rafi rarely disappointed them.

Nissar Baazmi later went to Pakistan and became a big composer. Even Noorjehan and Mehdi Hassan considered it an honour to sing for him in Pakistan. As long as Nissar Baazmi was in India, he somehow remained a C-grade composer. And at the time he did Khoj, he was a nobody.

It was as a nobody in HFM that Baazmi approached Rafi to sing for the rendition of a composition for “Khoj”. He could only afford to pay Rs 50 to Rafi. Rafi charged Baazmi just the token Re 1. The result- Chanda ka dil toot gaya roney lage hain sitaare Just the shot in the arm that a struggling music director, as well as the lyricist (Raja Mehdi ali Khan) could have dreamed of !

Pandit Shivram was a small time composer as well. He too had only Rs 50 to offer Rafi for singing a song. In return, Rafi offered him as well as the music lovers this priceless song Daulat ke jhoothhe nashe mein ho choor (Oonchi Haweli)(1955) .

Rafi left his mark even in movies where Talat Mehmood was the main singer and Rafi got to sing sung one song. Take for instance Ghulam Mohammad composition Hai bas ki har ek unke ishare mein nishaan aur (Mirza Ghalib), S D Burman’s Manzil ki chaah mein (Devdas).

How Rafi could hold his own for a composer where other singers had given their best for him is tellingly illustrated in case of songs composed by Baabul. Manna Dey had sung two superb duets in in Reshmi Roomal, viz. Zulfon ki ghataa lekar saawan ki pari aayi (with Asha Bhonsle) and Aankh mein shokhi lab pe tabassum (with Suman Kalyanpur) . This movie also boasted the Talat Mehmood timeless classic Jab chaaye kabhi saawan ki ghata(Reshmi Roomaal)(1961). Mukesh too added his mite Reshmi Roomal through Gardish mein hon taare na ghabraanaa pyaare (Reshmi Roomaal) .

Next movie that Baabul got was “Naqli Nawaab” where the same hero Majoj Kumar was to lip sync the songs. Despite recording such awesome male playback songs in his previous movie, Babul switched to Rafi in “Naqli Nawaab”. Rafi was paid Rs 200 for this movie. The timeless classics that Rafi came up with were- Tum poochhte ho ishq balaa hai ke nahin hai (Naqli Nawaab) and Chheda jo dil ka fasaanaa( Naqli Nawaab) .

If Rafi’s created gems for Babul did the same for Babul’s erstwhile partner Bipin as well ! For Bipin Datta, Rafi sang Ye Bombay shahar ka badaa naam hai (Kya ye Bombay hai ?)

If music director Dulaal Sen is remembered today, then it is thanks to one “Black Prince”(1960) Rafi solo song viz. Nigaahein na phero chaley jaayenge ham (Black prince) .

C Arjun much later, told that he felt very proud that he had at least created a ghazal that could come somewhere near a Madan Mohan composition. I wanted special attention to this my coveted ghazal from my singer but all good singers available were bigger than the film for which I had composed it! revealed Arjun. It was with great hesitation, therefore, that I approached Rafi Saab to render my ghazal, so feelingly written by Indivar. And Rafi Saab, without bothering about the small payment we were in a position to make, said it was one of the best ghazals that had fallen to his lot and he would give it everything that he had.not ready to sing for a small time music director in a B grade movie. Rafi had no such qualms. He obliged C Arjun and came up with a rendition that ensured that this ghazal even till date in bracketed among the best ghazals of Hindi movies. This ghazal with Madan Mohanesque quality was Paas baitho tabeeyat bahal jaayegi (Punar Milan) .

Lala-Asad-Sattar three instrumentalists turned struggling music directors could get Rafi to sing for them and Rafi did what he always did- provided A grade song in a B grade movie-Main to tere haseen khayaalon mein kho gayaa (Sangram) .

Sapan Jagmohan made their debut as a music director duo with “Begaana”(1962). A good blueprint that the music director duo had created was converted into a memorable masterpiece by Rafi-Phir wo bhooli si yaad aayi hai(Begaana)(1963).

We have had many A grade compositions in B and C grade movies. A good number of such compositions are in Rafi’s voice and they came about because Rafi would put art before commerce and would sing for pittance no matter how “small” a movie or its music directors were. That is how we got Iqbal Quraishi’s composition Subah na aayi shaam na aayi(Cha Cha Cha) and Sonik-Omi offering Dono ne kiya tha pyaar magar(Mahua)(1969).

The Rafi touch could turn any disc into gold! The above information is based partly on an article written by Raju Bharatan for The Illustrated Weekly of India, Aug 93.

The music Director for film Oonchi Haveli-55 was Shivram or Pt. Shivram Krishna. He was one of those composers who could not get very famous, though he composed very well. Pt. Shivram Krishna was born at Jodhpur on March 22, 1927. He started learning music at the age of 8 under the tutelage of his father Master Tulsidas, who worked with Marwar Record Company, Jodhpur from 1934 onwards. He was later employed in the court of the Maharaja of Jodhpur, Umed Singh as a singer/musician. It was the name and fame of Khemchand Prakash that inspired him to try his luck in films. At the age of 16, he went to Lahore where he worked under Pandit Amarnath and Master Ghulam Haider for around three years, only to return to Jodhpur at the time of partition. From the year 1948 till 1950 he worked as a music director with His Masters Voice in Lucknow, and then made his way to Mumbai in 1951.

At Mumbai, Pt. Shivram was given his first break by V. Shantaram, who signed him for two of his films – Teen Batti Chaar Raasta (1953) and Surang (1953). The music of both the films was appreciated and the films became silver jubilee hits. Besides these, V. Shantaram gave him two more films in 1960 – ‘Phool Aur Kaliyan’ and ‘Kaale Gore’, the first winning the National Award for Best Children film, while the second remained unreleased. He used the voices of V. Shantaram’s daughters Charusheela and Madhura in children’s films.

Following the success of his initial films, Pt. Shivram caught the attention of Dhirubhai Desai and Nakhshab Jarchavi, who signed him for their next films, Oonchi Haveli (1955) and Raftaar (1955) respectively. The songs of these two films were also quite successful. Then came Sati Ansuya (1956), another film by Dhirubhai Desai that started the trend and literally sealed his fate as a composer of mythological films. Barring Naya Kadam (1958), a social drama, and Rangeela Raja (1960), a stunt film, and the two children films by V. Shantaram, all the films he got after Sati Ansuya were religious/ mythological films. In all, out of the 23 films he composed for, as many as 14 were religious/ mythological films.

Despite composing some good songs for these films, the success he got with his initial films could not be repeated given the limited popularity of such films and similarity in the genre of songs. Barring a few songs from Shravan Kuman (1960), Kan Kan Mein Bhagwan (1963) and Sati Naari (1965), most of the songs are all but forgotten. ‘Tum Naacho Ras Barse’ by Mahendra Kapoor in Sati Naari fetched Pt. Shivram the Swami Haridas Award in 1966.

The last two Hindi films of Pt. Shivram were Sampoorna Teerth Yatra (1970) and Mahapavan Teerth Yatra (1975), both of which have the unique distinction of featuring what could be the longest Hindi film songs, running 45 and 70 minutes respectively. Both these songs were about the various places of pilgrimage in India and were almost similar in tune and structure. Interestingly, he had also composed two more songs on similar lines in Durga Pooja (1962) and Kan Kan Mein Bhagwan (1963).

Pandit Shivram gave music for various regional languages such as Rajasthani, Bhojpuri, Punjabi, Haryanvi, etc. He was the default composer for Rajasthani films all through the 1960s, starting with the first Rajasthani film Babasa Ri Ladli (1961). He also composed for several Marwari and classical music non-film albums. As a proficient Harmonium player, he teamed with table-nawaaz Ustaad Nizamuddin Khan to produce a classical album. Pandit Shivram was as good a vocal artist as he was a harmonium player. He sang in films like Oonchi Haveli, Rangeela Raja, Sati Ansuya, Badrinath Yatra, etc.

The lyricists Pt. Shivram worked with, were more or less decided by the films he worked in. While he worked with the likes of Asad Bhopali, Shevan Rizvi, Pyare Lal Santoshi, Nakhshab Jarchavi, etc. in his non-mythological films, predominantly ‘Hindi’ writers like Bharat Vyas, Kavi Pradeep, Neeraj, Madan Bharti and Pt. Indra wrote for his mythological films. Pt. Indra and Bharat Vyas were his prime contributors for Rajasthani films.

Pandit Shivram died in February 1980 leaving behind a family of musicians. His daughter Jayshree Shivram is a singer. Two of his sons, Jugal Kishore and Tilak Raj jointly composed for a few Hindi films, debuting with Bheegi Palkein (1983). His third son, Naveen Shivram had started his musical career with giving music for the serial Apnapan in 1999 and went to compose for a few small time Hindi films and some Rajasthani film and non-film albums as well. Another son, Mukesh, was also a composer and is no more. ( Information on Shivram, based on urgetofly.com and my notes.)

Now, here is a fun song from this film, sung by Rafi and chorus. Though Asha Bhosle’s name is also credited, I did not find any female voice in the song.
PS-Now Sadanand Kamath Jee has pointed out that this song is a two part song and Asha Bhonsle’s voice does appear in the second part of the song. So this song is a Rafi-Asha Bhonsle duet, after all.

haaye re baandi ke banda
haaye re phaansi ka phanda
tere liye ae
maine laakhon ke bol sahe

ikanni duwanni

Blog Day : 3767 Post No. : 14741

“Qawwaali Ki Raat”(1964) was Directed by Durgesh Kumar and Santoshi for Durgesh Productions, Bombay. This “social” movie had Kumkum, Kamaljeet, Mumtaz, Deven Verma, Jagdeep, Mohan Choti, Murad, aruna Irani, Johny Whisky, Kamal Mehra, Parshuram, Mirza Musharraf, Tuntun, Balam, Kathana, Jerry, Jankidas, Baroon Van Hizi, Kingkong etc in it.

The movie had eleven songs in it and most were qawwaalis as can be guessed from the title. Ten songs from the movie have been covered in the blog.

The eleventh and final song from the movie was apparently not included in the movie. Only its audio was released and this song is available.

Despite the song being available, I was not taking it up because this song was a duet with Rafi’s voice in it. Seeing that Sudhir jee was covering Rafi duets in his marathon series “Rafi duets अ से ह तक “, I was not taking chances because in the past I have posted songs that Sudhir Jee had reserved for some special occasions and with my memory being what it is, I had forgotten about that.

So, I double checked. Sudhir Jee is now onto the letter य while this duet from “Qawwaali Ki Raat”(1964) begins with an earlier letter viz प which was already covered in the previous post. So this song was “safe” to be covered. 🙂

So, here is the eleventh and final song from “Qawwaali Ki Raat”(1964) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. Shewan Rizvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Iqbal Qureshi.

Here are the details of the earlier ten songs from the movie:-

This song, the eleventh and final song was excluded from the movie as far as I can tell. In case it was picturised, it would have been on the lead pair of Kamaljeet and Kumkum.

With this song, all the songs of “Qawwaali Ki Raat”(1964) are covered in the blog and the movie joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.
PS-It has pointed out by Mr Sadanand Kamath that the video of this song is available. And the song is indeed picturised on the lead pair.

Song-Pyaar ki hasraten khaaq mein mil gayin (Qawwaali Ki Raat)(1964) Singer-Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Shewan Rizvi, MD-Iqbal Qureshi

Lyrics

pyaar ki hasraten khaaq mein mil gayin
pyar ki hasraten khaaq mein mil gayin
do kadam chalke do humsafar jal gaye
do kadam chalke do humsafar jal gaye
zindagi aag banti hai jis mod par
zindagi aag banti hai jis mod par
donon raahi usi mod par jal gaye

do kadam chalke do humsafar jal gaye

aisi bijli giri shaakh gulzaar par
aashiyaana bachaaya to par jal gaye
aashiyaana bachaaya to par jal gaye

kuchh na baaqi raha zindagi mein meri
kuchh na baaqi raha zindagi mein meri
ek dhuaan reh gaya dil jigar jal gaye
do kadam chal ke do humsafar jal gaye

aah roki to seene se shole uthhe
ban gaye ashq aankhon mein chingaariyaan
ban gaye ashq aankhon mein chingariyaan
do mohabbat bhare dil sulagne lage
yaani do aarzuon ke ghar jal gaye

do kadam chal ke do humsafar jal gaye

aatishe ishq mein koi shola nahin
aatishe ishq mein koi shola nahin
phir bhi is aag mein ghar ke ghar jal gaye

do kadam chal ke do humsafar jal gaye
donon raahi usi mod par jal gaye
