Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 29

‘र’ – रात अंधेरी, गई गई गई ॰ ॰ ॰

वो जब याद आए, बहुत याद आए ॰ ॰ ॰

Your own words are so prophetic. The memories of your songs, when they descend upon the mind – it is a deluge that covers the mind.

– – – –

Another day, another letter of the alphabet, and another fabulous duet – Rafi Sb and Asha Bhosle.

This song is from the 1960 film ‘Rangeela Raja’. This is a stunt film which was produced under the banner of Diamond Jubilee Films, and was produced and directed by Ismail. The cast of actors in this film is listed as Kumkum, Mahipal, Shashikala, Meenu Mumtaz, Bhagwan, Dhanraj, Jayant, Kammo, Uma Dutt, Chand Burque, Satish, Kesari, Zippy, and Pintu.

Geet Kosh lists eight songs of this film. One song is already showcased here, this is the second song of this film to come on board. All the songs have been penned by Asad Bhopali, and the music director is Pt Shivram. This song sounds like a group dance song which is celebrating some kind of success, emphasized by the opening lines of the song,

raat andheri,    gayi gayi gayi gayi
bhor suhaani,   bhai bhai bhai bhai

Another wonderful memory from the radio listening days. A zippy pace that picks up speed as the song comes to a close. And a quick mixture of singing voices and the chorus. Delectable creation. 🙂

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 30
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

‘ल’ – लीजिये दिल का नज़राना, लीजिये आँख का शुक्राना ॰ ॰ ॰

– – – –

आवाज़ दे कर हमें तुम बुलाओ ॰ ॰ ॰

Ah yes, that is what the heart desires, but sadly, that will happen no more. . . you are so far away now, that our supplications so sent, do not reach you any more.

– – – –

OK, wow, another gem from the radio listening days. And what a wonderful reminder this song is. The film is ‘Naya Kanoon’ from 1965, and Rafi Sb is accompanied by Asha Bhosle in this song. Given that Madan Mohan is the music director, I am a little surprised that Lata does not figure in this film at all. Eight songs in all, with four female solos, and one duet (this one) – all carry the voice of Asha Bhosle. Possibly this recording may have been done during the time when there was a stand off between Lata ji and Rafi Sb. Still surprising that Madan Mohan did not get Lata to sing even one of the solo songs. Or possibly, other reasons, circumstances may have intervened.

The film is directed by RC Talwar for the banner of Manchanda Productions, Bombay. The main star cast is listed as Ashok Kumar, Vaijayantimala, Bharat Bhushan, Poornima, Nishi, Leela Mishra, Badri Prasad, Kamal Mehra, and Om Prakash among others. There are eight songs in this film, or may be seven, because one song is a multi version song sung as a solo by both Rafi Sb and Asha Bhosle. All songs are from the pen of Hasrat Jaipuri, except one, which is written by Saraswati Kumar Deepak.

On screen, this song is filmed a recording studio song. The two singers – Bharat Bhushan and Vijayantimala, are recording this song in a studio. Or maybe the song is being broadcast live.  As we see the three stanzas, there are short visual interludes, and the dresses of the two artistes are different in each stanza. The intervening scenes convey a message as if displaying the rising popularity, as well as prosperity of the singer.

Bharat Bhushan in this 1965 film is a distant call from his heydays of ‘Baiju Baawra’ in 1952. Decidedly not looking any younger, but he is also looking much more morose. As the visual clip starts and the music comes on, the mind gets into position for a fast paced light hearted duet. But the expression on the face of the hero conveys as if he is going to break into “Maayoos To Hoon Waade Se Tere. . .🙂 🙂 .

Regardless, a very breezy composition which will tickle a few memories in the minds of radio listeners.  Listen and relive those memories.

Song – Lijiye Dil Ka Nazraana, Lijiye Aankh Ka Shukraana  (Naya Kanoon) (1965) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Hasrat Jaipuri, MD – Madan Mohan

Lyrics

lijiye dil ka nazraana
lijiye aankh ka shukraana
ye preet banegi afsaana
bolo to sahi hai kya marzi
bolo to sahi hai kya marzi
lijiye dil ka nazraana
lijiye aankh ka shukraana
ye preet banegi afsaana
bolo to sahi hai kya marzi
bolo to sahi hai kya marzi

aankh ne dekha to dil ne paa liya
meethi baaton ne hamne behka liya
pyaar mein hum bhi tumhaare ho gaye
tum miley to hum khushi se kho gaye
kadmon mein khada hai deewaana
bolo to sahi hai kya marzi
bolo to sahi hai kya marzi
lijiye dil ka nazraana
lijiye aankh ka shukraana

dil bade armaan se laaya hoon main
ye kali toofaan se laaya hoon main
meri palken jhuk rahi hain laaj se
tum hamaare ho chuke ho aaj se
aaya hai shama ka parwaana
bolo to sahi hai kya marzi
bolo to sahi hai kya marzi
lijiye dil ka nazraana
lijiye aankh ka shukraana

aur bhi duniya mein laakhon chaand hain
aapke aage magar wo maand hain
aur bhi duniya mein laakhon phool hain
aapke aage magar wo dhool hain
haazir hai tumhaara mastaana
bolo to sahi hai kya marzi
bolo to sahi hai kya marzi
lijiye dil ka nazraana
lijiye aankh ka shukraana
ye preet banegi afsaana
bolo to sahi hai kya marzi
bolo to sahi hai kya marzi
lijiye dil ka nazraana
lijiye aankh ka shukraana

“Rickshaawaala”(1960) was produced by Shankar Mehta-M Acharya and K C Verma and directed by Shankar Mehta for Kala Darpan, Bombay. This “social” movie had Johny Walker, Anita Guha, Radhakishan, Kuldeep Kaur, Ramlal, Jagdev, Minu Mumtaz, Jagdeesh Kanwal, Sadhana, Mohan Modi, Darshan, Dukhiya, Radheshyam, Krishn Billa, C K Shah, Sayyad, Satpal, Dinanath, Devraj, Moolraj, Amir Ali, Murari, Rasheed, Bela, Sheela etc in it.

The movie had seven songs in it. One song has been covered in the past.

Here is the second song from “Rickshaawaala”(1960) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. Jaan Nisaar Akhtar is the lyricist. Music is composed by N Datta.

Only the audio of the song is available. It seems certain that Rafi had sung by Johny Walker. Asha Bhonsle most likely had sung for Anita Guha. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the movie as well as on the picturisation of the song.

Today’s song is a very very special song. It is from film Roomal-49. Four songs from this film are already discussed. Luckily, this song was yet to be discussed, as if waiting for me. It is a duet of Mohd. Rafi and Asha Bhosle. Written by Nazim Panipati, it is composed by Hansraj Behl. HFGK is silent on the MD’s name for all songs, though there were two of them- Hansraj Behl and Aziz Khan. However, there are other references to confirm that Behl was composer for this song, namely 1. The uploader has mentioned his name 2. Rafi’s Excel sheet mentions his name and 3. Behl’s name is mentioned for this song in book ‘ Rafinama’ by Isak Mujawar.

Now, coming to the point why this song is special. The reason is….this is the First ever duet of Rafi and Asha Bhosle. Rafi had started Playback recording from 1944 and Asha started from 1948. Within one year, Asha sang a duet with Rafi in film Roomal-49. Another film Lekh was also made in 1949 and they sang in that film too, but Roomal duet was the First one to be recorded.

Incidentally, Asha and Rafi had the maximum duets in HFM. They sang a total of 806 duets from 1949. Their last duet came on the screen in film Kala Coat-1993 ( 13 years after Rafi had left us.)-MD Iqbal Gill. Asha Bhosle and Rafi created 3 records during their journey together-
1. Maximum duets – 806
2. Maximum duets in one MD’s films – 92 duets in OPN’s films.
3. Rafi-Asha maximum duets in one film- Basant-60 – 11 duets
(Ed note-The blog has 514 Rafi-Asha Duets, including this song.)

Mohd. Rafi was the only singer who sang duets with the 3 major female actor singers of the 40s. He sang with Noorjehan (Jugnu-47), Khurshid ( Aage Badho-47) and Suraiya (Kajal-48 and in 11 more films).

Besides the known and well known female singers, Rafi sang duets with some ‘ not so well known ‘ female singers too. Some of them are Laxmi Rai, Kumudini Dikshit, Lakshmi shankar, Gandhari Rane, Promodini Desai, Razia Begum, Malti Pande, Pushpa Huns, Ramola, Pushpa Pagdhare, Pratibha, Kanchan, Poornima, Meena Patki, Jyoti, Kamla Sista, Kaushi Gidwani, Savita Suman, Sumitra Lahiri, Sagarika Mukherji, Krishna Bose, Krishna Mukherji, etc etc.

Rafi sang maximum songs with Laxmikant-Pyarelal (369), followed by Shankar-Jaikishen – 341, Chitragupt-247, Ravi-235, O P Nayyar-197, Kalyanji – Anandji – 169, Naushad-149, Madan Mohan-169, R D Burman-122, Usha Khanna-114, Sonik- Omi-104 and N Dutta-102. ( all figures from book Rafinama by Isak Mujawar).

Rafi sang only 1 duet with Meena Kapoor in film Aabroo-56. There is another song having voices of Meena, Rafi,Asha and Manna Dey in Tajmahal-63). This is understandable considering Anil da’s opinion about Rafi’s singing !

Film Roomal-49 was directed by Ramchandra Thakur. He was born on 17-12-1908 at Suver ( noe Umedgadh) in Sabarkantha Dist. Gujarat. From his 9th year onwards he was educated in Bombay. He completed his M.A. in Pali language, to become a Teacher but not so good results forced him to join Film industry. He had already written articles on films. He had also translated sound recordist Minoo Katrak’s book in Hindi and Gujarati.
He joined the Marketing department of Sagar Movietone. After Baburao Patel headed that department, he was shifted as asstt. director. He co directed film Gramophone Singer, along with Virendra Desai-the owner’s son-who later married Nalini jaywant despite he being already married.

Thakur’s first film as an independent director was ‘Civil Marriage’-40, in which Snehprabha Pradhan made her debut. He worked for Ranjit, Prakash and other banners. Her directed 20 films. His last film was Nawab Sirajuddoula-67. He mainly directed Mythologicals, social and comedy films.
He was a multifaceted person. He knew and could speak 11 languages. He wrote scripts for film Baiju Bawra-52 and several Gujarati films. He also directed 2 Gujarati films. He wrote 4 research based Novels. His article on Sagar Movietone has become a reference point for researchers.
Ramchandra Thakur died on 31-10-1992. (adapted from ‘ Sagar Movietone’-Biren kothari)

The cast of film Roomal-49 was Nargis, Rehman, Jairaj, Jeevan, Badriprasad, Jillobai, Cuckoo, Jankidas etc etc.

Jillobai ( real name Zuleikha Ibrahim) was a Tawayef from Delhi. She started from stage dramas and then silent films. During this period, Master Nissar was attracted towards her, but being a shrewd woman, she spurned his advances, only after lot of money was spent on her by him.. She acted in 57 Talkie films and also sang 3 songs in 3 films initially. Her first film was Veer Abhimanyu-31 and last film was Alladin and jadui chirag-52. She acted in many popular films like Anarkali-35, Kissan Kanya-37, Pukar-39, Sikander-41, Taqdeer-43, Zeenat-45, Jugnu- 47 etc etc.

Nazim Panipati, who wrote the songs of film Roomal-49, along with Mulkraj Bhakri and Rupbani, was born in lahore in 1920. His real name was Muhammed Ismail Khan. He was the younger brother of Dirctor/Lyricist Wali sahab. Due to his hobby of writing shairi, he was introduced to Dalsukh Pancholi and Roop k. Shorey. He first wrote songs for Punjabi films. His first film as a Lyricist in Hindi was Zamindar-42. He shifted to Bombay and wrote 80+ songs in 25 films. His last film in India was Sheesham-52. Then he migrated to Pakistan. He wrote more than 120 songs for Pak Television and Punjabi/Urdu films. He died in Lahore on 18-6-1998.

Today’s song by Rafi, Asha and chorus looks to be a fun comedy song. Enjoy this song….

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Today 4th January is the twenty fifth ‘Remembrance Day’ (27th June’1939- 04th January’1994) of the ‘versatile genius’ RD Burman or our beloved Pancham Da. One cannot believe that it is twenty five years now since Pancham Da left us. His songs are a daily routine for me and maybe many like me, and so it never appears that he is not there. He is always there with us – the music lovers.

Abdul Hameed, Mac Mohan, Umesh Sharma, Swaraj Gupta, Anand Mohan, Umesh Khanna, K N Reddy, Pawan Babu, Asha Sachdev, Prema Narayan etc. in it.

As per HFGK this movie was passed by Censor Board on 07.04.1980. It had total seven songs in it wherein Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Mahendra Kapoor, and Mohd Rafi gave their voices to the songs in this movie. Lyrics for this movie were written by Anand Bakshi and Music was composed by R.D. Burman.

I do not remember to have heard this song till this post. Also from the list of other songs of this movie they don’t seem familiar to me. Though I am aware that there was this movie in those days, but have not watched it then and even till date. This is the second song from this film to appear on the blog.

Here is the brief about this film that Atul ji mentioned while posting the first song from this film (on 09.09.2013) – Moorty Ganesh Ki Andar Daulat Desh Ki.

In today’s song Sanjeev Kumar and Zeenat Aman are lip syncing in Mohd Rafi and Asha Bhonsle’s voice respectively on the screen. Ashok Kumar, Kamini Kaushal, Jeevan, Bindiya Goswami and others are seen in the song.

From the video of the song one can assume that Zeenat Aman looks for her ‘Shyam’ in Sanjeev Kumar and Ashok Kumar seems to find the spiritual one, few seem to be interested in Kanhaiyya’s moorty itself and Sanjeev Kumar preparing to take on the evils or he too wants to get this ‘moorty’. Only those who have watched this movie can help us.

But the song is a nice hummable one. As mentioned above lyrics of this song are by Anand Bakshi and it is composed by RD Burman.

Let us now enjoy this interesting song.

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 34

It is your words that tell of this predicament. Seasons come and go, as they have, year on year on year. . .  but the one who this heart wants to listen to again, has not returned after going away. . .

– – – –

With today’s song, we come to the end of this series of duets of Rafi Sb. This series got initiated on Rafi Sb’s birth anniversary (24th Dec) in 2017.  Having gone through 33 episodes, we come to the closure with the Hindi alphabet letter ‘ह’. On the way, over the past almost 15 months, we have touched upon many a wonderful duet songs that simply perpetuate the legend of this divine voice. A blessing that we shared the same time and the planet with him for a certain period of time. The association, and its lasting awareness, has been such a lovely enchanting experience, that has left in the mind two opposing emotions – happiness and regret.  Happiness that we have a wonderful legacy treasure bequeathed to us by this voice. And regret that there could have been more, but alas not destined to be. God works in his own mysterious ways, and we are but mortals subject to his method and his directions.

So much has been said – about Rafi Sb, in this series, and by other contributors on this blog. And by many others, writing about him on various platforms and publications. Satish Shenoy ji, in a comment earlier today, has written – “Any number of posts on Rafisaab are welcome, even at the cost of repetition”.  Yes, eventually there is a limit to words, and to the expressions.  But even after reaching that limit, the heart feels that enough has not been said.  What more could be said, I don’t know.  But I know that “कल और आएंगे॰॰॰ हमसे बेहतर कहने वाले” – and more will be said and written about Rafi Sb, in ways that has not found an expression as yet.  Such is the magic of this wondrous voice, I believe.

Today’s song is from the 1962 film ‘Mall Road’.  The singing accompaniment is Asha Bhosle.  Words are from the pen of Prem Warburtani and the music is from the mind of Sudarshan.

So much more seems to be still wound up inside that needs to be said.  And all that needs to be said, is probably already present in the words that Rafi Sb has sung in his life.  Just to say that he is incomparable, comes to mind the lines he has already uttered,

Maybe some more needs to be said.  Maybe another series of Rafi Sb songs will come about.  Nahm ji has also restarted one of her pending series just last week.  Still a good number of his songs are waiting to be posted here – about a couple of thousands more to go. A lot of opportunity still – to write more about him.  So yes, maybe another series of his songs, who knows. For now, let us listen to this song today – and the words that will come to mind are

Aameen.

We had this post last year on the same date by Avinashji where he has written about the background of the movie “Woh Main Nahi”(1974). He has listed all the famous songs and movies of Navin Nischol. Most of the songs which I like are in that list.

So here’s a duet by Rafi and Asha Bhonsle which was written by Verma Malik. Music direction was by Sonik Omi. Visiting the movie after a full year on the occasion of Navin Nischol’s anniversary.

Missing Films of 1960s – 100
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Ah, finally, we get to a new type of century today. This series of bringing on board the missing films of 1960s becomes the series that has clocked 100 posts – a first one for our blog. This series got initiated three and half years ago on 30th September, 2015, and we arrive at the century station for it, at the rate of about 2 to 3 songs per month on average. The pace could have been faster, yes, but well, we have what we have. 🙂

As you must be aware, this series got kicked off by the efforts of Khyati Ben. She got into the exercise to check how many films of the 1960s (period from 1961 to 1970) have been brought on board our blog, and which ones are still waiting to be included. She came up with a list of some 190+ films, still waiting in the wings. The analysis resulted in this exercise, to bring on board as many of these 190+ films are traceable / available. And it got assigned to yours truly. 🙂

I will wait to present the final analysis of numbers, as there is still about seven of eight more films that are traceable and will be represented here. So bear with me for a little more time for that.

The film that we bring on board today is an obscure and lesser known film by the name ‘Ek Masoom’ from 1969. The interesting thing about this film is that although the gramophone records of this film have been available, the film itself was not available for a very long time. Finally, the film surfaced about a year ago, and I acquired a copy of it through a collector friend. Video clips of some of the songs are now available on the YouTube.

The film is produced under the banner of GNS Films Bombay, and is directed by Akhtar Khalid. The cast of actors listed for this film is Tanuja, Saleem Durrani, Prem Chopra, Surendra, Abhi Bhattacharya, Uma, Azra, Sulochana, Helen, Jagdeep, Murad, Mohan Choti, and Baby Masoom. I have a concern about this list. The name of Saleem Durrani is included. However, I have seen the film, and the Saleem Durrani (the cricketer) that we are familiar with, is not visible in this film. The lead actor opposite to Tanuja is a different person. One possibility is that this actor also has the name Saleem Durrani, or has used this name in this film. I request our more knowledgeable readers to please help to identify the male actor in this song. The face is completely new and unfamiliar.

The film itself is a cops and robbers tale and Mohan Choti plays the role of a gangster boss. The lead person, whom we are trying to identify, plays a triple role in this film. He appears in different situations with different names, causing a lot of confusion to the people around him. And then finally, there is court room drama where all the three appear one by one, and the mystery of the correct identity is solved.

The film does not have much to write home about. The direction and editing is below par and leaves a lot to be desired. The storyline moves with fits and starts. But the songs – now that is a different story, as usual. Seven songs are listed for this film. The music is by N Dutta. The lyricist’s name is just very, very unfamiliar – Fareed Tonki. As I checked some more, I find his name in just one more film – ‘Zaalim Tera Jawab Nahin’ (1960), and one unreleased film ‘Aqidat Ke Phool’. Checking on our blog, I find that one creation by him is posted here. This is a famous non-film qawwaali – “Raste Alag Alag Hain Thikaana To Ek Hai”. So the gentleman is represented already on our blog, although no other information is traceable so far about him. His name, Fareed Tonki, suggest that he may be from the town named Tonk, in Rajasthan.

The song that I present today is an exquisite duet of Rafi Sb and Asha Bhosle – such a lovely lost gem this one is. The composition is easy paced and and light, and the rendition is very soft and soothing. A very pleasing song to hear to. (Of course, the song is much better heard than viewed.) On screen, it is Tanuja, and this gentleman that I am not able to identify.

Song – Poochh Le Dil Se Mere Ho Na Agar Mera Yakeen  (Ek Masoom) (1969) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Fareed Tonki, MD – N Dutta

pooch le
dil se mere
ho na agar mera yakeen
pooch le dil se mere
ho na agar mera yakeen
pooch le dil se mere
ho na agar mera yakeen
main mohabbat hoon
mohabbat ke siwa kuchh bhi nahin
ae sanam
teri kasam
mujhko to hai tujh pe yakeen
par zamaane ka ye kehna
hai ke tu mera nahin
pooch le dil se mere
ho na agar mera yakeen

har taraf phaili hain ye
rangeeniaan rukhsaar ki
har taraf phaili hain ye
rangeeniaan rukhsaar ki
tere hi dum se to hai
shadaabiaan gulzar ki
tu jahaan rakhe kadam
phool khilen laakhon wahin
pooch le dil se mere
ho na agar mera yakeen

saamne tu hai mere
aur main tujhe dekha karoon
saamne tu hai mere
aur main tujhe dekha karoon
tere jalwon mein ab
shaam o sehar khoi rahoon
chhod ke daaman tera
jaaun na main aur kahin
ae sanam
teri kasam
mujhko to hai tujh pe yakeen

dil mera hai aaina
gar hai nazar pehchaan le
pehle hi pehchaan ke
dil hai diya ye jaan le
hum se kyon duniya jaley
ulfat koi jurm nahin
pooch le dil se mere
ho na agar mera yakeen
main mohabbat hoon
mohabbat ke siwa kuchh bhi nahin
pooch le dil se mere
ho na agar mera yakeen

“Khilaadi”(1968) was directed by Homi Wadia for Basant Pictures Bombay. This “social” movie had Nadia, Dilip Raj, Uma Bhende, Sujata, Sheikh, Suzie, Amarnath, Wazir Mohammad Khan, Vishwas Kunte, Uma Dutt, Dalpat, Habib etc in it.

The movie had five songs in it. One song has been covered in the past.

Here is the second song from “Khilaadi”(1968) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. Farooque Kaiser is the lyricist. Music is composed by Lala Sattar.

The song is picturised on Dilip Raj and Uma Bhende. Dilip Raj was son of P Jairaj. Uma Bhende, a leading Marathi movie actress, had famously lip synced the popular “Dosti”(1964) song “Gudiya hamse roothi rahogi” earlier.

Song-Pyaar koi kam kam kare (Khilaadi)(1968) Singers-Asha Bhonsle, Rafi, Lyrics-Farooque Kaiser, MD-Lala Sattar

Lyrics

pyaar koi kam kam kare
haaye alla
dheer dhare ji zara dheer dhare
kaahe gori chham chham kare
haaye alla
bijli gire ji dil pe bijli gire

pyaar koi kam kam kare
kaahe gori chham chham kare

hove ruswa na meri jawaani
mujhpe itni karo meharbaani
dil hai haazir abhi pyaar kar lo
phir na aayegi rut ye suhaani

duhaai duhaai mere saajna
koi kya karega tera saamna
haaye pyaar koi kam kam kare
haaye allah
dheer dhare ji zara dheer dhare
kaahe gori chham chham kare
haaye alla
bijli gire ji dil pe bijli gire

pyaar koi kam kam kare
kaahe gori chham chham kare

tu jo chaahe to kismat bana loon
dil ki dhadkan mein tujhko chhupa loon

aisi nazron se dekho na balma
hosh apne main kaise sambhaaloon
nasha hai sanam ye mere pyaar ka
bharosa nahin hai tere pyaar ka
haaye kaahe gori chham chham kare
haaye allah
bijli gire ji dil pe bijli gire

pyaar koi kam kam kare
haaye alla
dheer dhare ji zara dheer dhare
kaahe gori chham chham kare
pyaar koi kam kam kare ae ae

Blog Day : 4029 Post No. : 15145

When you enjoy something, you think nothing of it without jumping on it. On the other hand, if you consider something as a burden, you cannot bring yourself to d it and start postponing it till you can no longer postpone it.

July is one such month when one is required to perform such unpleasant tasks. If one is an Indian tax payer then he must file his tax return by the end of this month. Most people find it an unpleasant task and kep postponing it. When they finally persuade themselves to do it on the last day, they find that others have also got the same idea. And since many people are trying to do the same thing at the same time, the system crashes and that throws things out of gear for everyone concerned.

The government also realises it and the last date is often extended. This year was one such occasion. The last date of filing income tax return has now been extended by one month. The last minute IT return filers will now procrastinate till end of august and will then scramble to file their returns on 31 august 2019, I am sure of it. 🙂

If one is an income tax return filer as well as a central government employee then one has some most unpleasant tasks to perform in this month. This tast is, filling up one’s performance review for the last year. It is called APAR (Annual Performance Appraisal Report).

In the past, things were done manually. Now everything is done online. So, government officers file their APAR as well as ITR electronically.

For someone like me, who is an experienced computer user, filing online APAR and ITR should not be a problem. And these problems can be daunting.

Just like there is a deadline for filing ITR, there is a deadline for APAR as well. Officers in various central governments had time schedule, viz officers would file their self appraisal by 30 june 2019, reporting officer would give his report by 31 july 2019, reviewing officer would give his remark by 31 august 2019 and accepting officer by 15 september etc. Different departments and zones have their own time frame that may be a bit flexible. For instance, in my Railweay zone, one could file self appraisal by 15 july 2019 and reporting officer had to give their review by 5 august 2019 and reviewing officer by 20 august 2019 and accepting officer by 10 september 2019.

Last date for me to file my self appraisal in my APAR was 15 july 2019. It was threatened that after 15 july 2019, the form would move to the next authority (reporting officer) on its own if self appraisal was not done by then. I took no action till 11 july 2019. Then I started to act. I collected data and filled up the relevant portions and then saved the data. That was on friday 12 july 2019.

The next step was to digitally sign it and forward it online to the reporting authority. Digital signature turned out to be a big hassle. Every Government officer has a digital signature ( in a USB token form)with him that he uses for digital signatures for various purposes like filing APAR, authorising purchases etc. These digital signatures are valid only for two years. You merrily use a digital signature and before you realise it, its validity is over. Then one has to apply for new token.

The digital signature that I had successfully used till six months ago was no longer working and so I had obtained a new digital signature. And this was registered in the APAR software as well. But when I tried to sign my APAR form digitally, I got error message. I tried the whole friday and also saturday but I could not get my digital signature working.

I was not the only one struggling with my APAR of course. There were others as well. When I discussed my dilemma with others on the same boat, I was advised that the solution was to de register the digital signature and then re register it.

On monday (15 july 2019), which was the last day for my APAR to be sent, I tried to follow the advice. I de registered the digital signature and then re registered it. Then, with bated breath, I procceeded on to affix digital signature. Much to my relief, this time it worked like a charm and my APAR went through duly digitally signed, to the next authority, viz reporting officer.

I too was reporting officer and/or reviewing officer for many officers and their APARs has arrived on my inbox. So I proceeded to write them. The most satisfying part of the exercise for me was to digitally sign the document and find the satisfying message that the digitally signed document was successfully sent to the next authority. I quickly finished up all APA’s in one day when the going was good and the digital signature was co operating.

That done, I began to feel as if I had won a big battle. Now I began to prepare myself mentally for filing the ITR. Going by past experience, I know that one should not try to file ITR on the last day. One should file it at least a few days in advance when income tax depratment servers are not lightly loaded and respond well. On the last day, one may not even get to access these servers.

In the past, ITR filing was a manual process and it had to be submitted in the local Income tax office, duly taking stampedacknowledgement. It was a hassle and so many people, including me, would pay money to some chartered accountant, who would bring an ITR form and take your signature on it. Then he would fill up the various colums, submit the form to the income tax office and give you the stamped acknowledgement.

The chartered accountant earned his money because it was a work full of hassles. And then the income tax rates kept on changing every year. Moreover, female employees had different income tax rates. So I would just get in touch with a chartered accountant and pay him for filing ITR for me as well as my wife.

Since 2012 or so, it has become possible to file income tax online. One could file it online, and also digitally sign if you had a digital signature with you. I would resolve to have a digital signature for myself, but I could never live up to this resolution. So, the next best thing was to take print our of the online filled form, sign it manually and send it to Income tax department at Bangalore. After a few months, you would receive acknowledgement that your ITR was accepted.

When online filing of ITR became possible, I began to do it for me and my wife.

since this was once in an year exercise, I would forget how I had filled up the ITR the last year and I would start afresh. I was this feeling that I had forgotten how it is done, that was the cause behind my reluctance in filing ITR.

Though the last date for filing ITR was extended to 31 july 2019, I decided that it was high time that I mustered enough courage and be done with it. So, it was on 29 july 2019 that I opened the computer and logged on to the income tax department site. And it was there that I got stuck. What was my user name and password ? With some online query, I realised that once PAN number was the user ID. Then I typed my password on a hunch and it worked. So I was relieved. I was finally logged on to the income tax department site.

I chose the option of filing the return online. I had my form 16 ready with me. I managed to put most values correctly and was pleased that the online calculator agreed with the calculations of form 16. But when I reached the portion that calculated income tax, I found that I was supposed to pay some more tax according to IT department calculation, whereas my form 16 showed that I had paid more tax than needed and IT department owed me some refund.

Where was the discreparcy ? On carefull scrutiny, I realised that I had not mentioned by contribution towards PM national relief fund, which was 100 % tax deductible. But how to enter this figure ? The relevant column of section 80 G was not accepting the figure. Then I realised that the ITR form had another tab for donations under sction 80 G. I went to that tab, filled the details and found that the relevant column in the form now accepted this figure. I also found that now the form 16 figures of income tax matched with the online calculation. So IT department was now in agreement that I had paid all my IT and I owed some refund.

That done, I saved the draft and came to the final part which is always my favourite part, sending the filled up form. I clicked the send button. The form displayed two errors, one was that I had to specify the bank account where refund is to be received. Second error was about using some prohibited special characters. I rectified the errors and clicked the button. This time the form was submitted.

Submission was alright, but form needed to be verified as well. It was only after verification that the IT depratment processes it. The traditional method is take a print out, sigh it and send it by post of IT department at Bangalore. It is the older and non elegant method of doing it, which used to be the method followed by majority of tax filers. But now several method of e verificcation are available and the IT department keeps adding to it. Last time I had done the e verification though online banking. This time I found a new option, viz e verification through Aadhaar. I chose this option. One gets OTP on one’s Aadhar registered mobile and this OTP is then needed to be typed in on the form. When I did not get the OTP for some time, I again clicked the verify by Aadhaar button. When OTP came and I filled it, I had a feeling that second click meant another OTP and the OTP filled my me was for the earlier click and so my e verification would fail.

I was right. My e mail advised me that my e verification had failed.

I braced myself and repeated the process again. This time I patiently waited for the OTP to arrive. It arrived and I keyed in the numbers. Now I received confirmation message that my aadhaar verification was successful, the ITR was submitted and e verified and I did not have to do anything else.

I felt jubilant. Now it was time to do the same for my wife’s ITR. She had sent her IT details to me by whatsapp, but my mobile storage was full and while deleting my storage, I had deleted her IT details as well. I was itching to process my wife’s IT return but I did not have any details to go by.

After lunch time, I phoned my wife and asked her to send her tax details. Armed with those details, I opened the IT department page and tried to log on. But I got an error- username or password incorrect ! I checked again. The username, viz PAN number was right. Was the password incorrect ? How to check it. I found that I had fortunately saved the details of my wife’s later ITR. The password was incorrect. I fed the correct details and was relieved to find the page opening.

Feeding the details was no problem. I find that the details were already filled up in the form. Apparently, IT department already had picked up the details of her IT return from her form 26AS (TRACES). So the details matched perfectly.

So I saved the draft and submitted the return. As for e verification, I thought that I should do it through online banking. I did that and the OTP that came on my wife’s registered mobile was filled. But the e verification could not be done. Perhaps I had done some mistake. I should have logged out of ITax department site before going to bank site. So I decided to do it through Aadhaar verification. On clicking this option, the IT site demanded aadhaar OTP within 2 minutes. This 2 minute limit was not there when I was doing it for my own tax return. Thankfully the OTP arrived in time and I fed the OTP with 30 seconds to spare. This time the e verification was a success. So, I was able to file the IT return of my wife as well.

As always, when the task gets accomplished, I feel that it was easy ! But by the next eleven months, I will have forgotten the process and I would agains get nervous and feel clueless when it is time to file the ITR the next year. 🙂

After this rather long writeup, I struggled to come up with a “suitable” song to go with it. Then I tried to visualise what the lead pair of Hindi movies will do after they accomplish such an important task. They will go outdoors and sing a joyous duet, of course. 🙂

So, here is just that joyous duet song. The song is sung by Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Satyam.

The movie was directed by K S R Das for PNR Pictures, Madras. the movie had Anil Dhawan, Aruna Irani, Jyoti Laxmi, Narendranath, Jagdeep, Sulochana, Ramaprabha, Brahm Bhardwaj, Shetty, Coca Cola, Shekhar, Swaraj, Prem Kumar, Master Ripple Sapru, Bindu (special appearance), Baby Dolly, Baby Charulata etc in it.

The movie had five songs in it. Two songs have been covered in the past.

The song is picturised on Anil Dhawan and an unfamiliar looking lady. Going by the cast, my guess is that she is Jyoti Laxmi. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the lady.

Blog Day : 4176 Post No. : 15351

Hullo Atuldom

Today’s post is for a song from the 1981 release “Zamaane ko Dikhaana Hai” which was produced and directed by Nasir Hussain. It marked the debut of Padmini Kolhapure as an adult; prior to this she had acted as a child star in numerous movies. The music department was handled by Majrooh Sultanpuri and R D Burman. The songs were play-backed by Asha Bhonsle, Shailendra Singh, Mohd. Rafi and Pancham. Nasir Hussain took a few scenes from his “Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hain” – song on train top; runaway girl from “Caravan” and a song & dance competition inspired from “Hum Kisise Kum Nahin”. Additionally, there are multiple songs in a scene as in “Yaadon Ki Baraat” and “Hum Kisise Kum Nahin”.

The story of the movie was very simple and straight: – a rich man, Dr. Shreeram Lagoo (may his soul rest in peace) has two sons Ramesh (Randhir Kapoor in a guest appearance) and Ravi (Rishi Kapoor). Ramesh (the older son) loves and marries a not-so-rich girl and so is banished from the household. All this happens during the absence of the younger Ravi who convinces his dad to forgive his BHAIYYA and sets out to bring his brother back. He finds that his bhaiyya and bhabhi are dead leaving their baby in the care of the bhabhi’s sister Kanchan (Padmini Kolhapure). Now his job is to convince Kanchan of his good intentions, fall in love with her in the process and take her & his nephew home but not before the movie runs through its set of twists and turns. Then there is also the rich man’s bad brother to take care of before the movie comes to an ‘ALL IS WELL THAT ENDS WELL’ close.

The movie had fairly popular songs, two of which are already on the blog. Today’s song is a multi- version song. Also, one of the version forms part of the multiple song set that I mentioned. In one version we have a song and dance competition where Vijay Arora (guest appearance) along with his partner (Aarti Gupta- also in guest appearance) challenges Rishi to the floor. But he is too drunk to get off the chair. So, Padmini takes to the floor sings & moves a leg and Rishi Kapoor joins and they compete with good support from the kids in the audience.

The second version with different stanzas has a drunk Padmini leading the song where the lovers fantasize about their future. We had Mohd. Rafi and Asha Bhosle giving their voices to the two songs.

This movie released about a year after Rafi saab’s death. This post is also to celebrate the 95th birth anniversary of Padmashri Mohd Rafi.
Rafi saab- the man who started his career in films in 1944 with a song under Shyam Sunder’s baton. In the career that spanned 36 years he had lent his voice for all the actors who have graced the silver screen in that time frame. He also appeared on-screen in two films. He was the favourite singer of an entire generation and the following generation too. People loved his Halke-Phulke songs as much as his classical based songs. He had great control on his voice and could go full-throated or soft in the same song. Don’t know why god stopped making singers like him and no matter how much one sounded like Rafi saab they couldn’t sing like him and none of his clones or apes or people who claimed to have been inspired by him reached that height of popularity. And I have heard and read in various places that he was a very humble human being. Like the song which Amitabh sang in a movie (in Mohd. Aziz’s voice) in 1990 “na phankaar tujhsa tere baad aaya, Mohd. Rafi tu bahut yaad aaya”; we, his fans, too miss him.

Wishing that Rafi Saab was still with us and thanking god for giving us such a divine-voiced singer let us enjoy today’s song.

Hullo Atuldom

Listening to music is a pastime. And if it is film songs – all the more good. Plus if it is HFM I couldn’t ask for more- anyone who knows me knows this. Fellow atulites included. Followers of the blog also are aware that “vividh bharati” the radio station, is my reminder diary.

So soon as I heard the program remembering Parveen Babi – of the lustrous hair- I looked for hitherto unposted songs and found many possibilities.

I have zeroed in on a song where she is romancing Jeetendra or trying to stop him from getting into trouble. I must admit that I know two songs from this movie, one of which, a Kishore Kumar- Asha Bhonsle duet Naye puraane saal mein ek raat baaki has been posted by Sudhirji in 2014.

The movie “Raksha” had a total of five songs, the handiwork of the trusted pair of RD Burman- Anand Bakshi. The movie was supposed to be a spy movie with Jeetendra’s character having the code name ‘Agent 116’. For added measure Parveen Babi also had two names – Chanda and Bijli. Today we have the Jeetendra lip syncing to Mohd. Rafi and Asha is the female playback.

Thinking of the beautiful Parveen Babi on the occasion of her anniversary.

Song-Main chalta hoon mujhe jaane do (Raksha)(1982) Singers-Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics

main chalta Hoon

main chalta hoon mujhe jaane do
chale jaana
honthon pe dil ki baat aane do
chale jaana
honthon pe dil ki baat aane do

o main chalta hoon
mujhe jaane do
main chalta hoon
mujhe jaane do

yakeen karo kisi tarah
milenge kal issi tarah
yakeen karo kisi tarah
milenge kal issi tarah
kal toh kitni door hai
mera dil majboor hai
thehero thodi der toh
dil ka haal sunane do

o main chalta hoon
mujhe jaane do
main chalta hoon
mujhe jaane do

lallaalala laalalalala
laalalalalala
abhi mile abhi chale
rahe mujhe bade gile
abhi mile abhi chale
rahe mujhe bade gile

sab gile mit jaayenge
jab gale lag jaayenge
itni door baithe ho
thoda paas toh aane do
hmmm hmmm rurururururu
main chalta hoon mujhe jaane do (rururururu)

khuli hawa haseen Samaa
ruko zara chale kahaan
khuli hawa haseen Samaa
ruko zara chale kahaan

ek toh kaam zaroori hai
dooje kuchch majboori hai
donon baatein jhoothi hain
yeh hain saaf bahaane do
rurururururu

main chalta hoon
mujhe jaane do
chale jaana
honthon pe dil ki baat aane do
chale jaana
honthon pe dil ki baat aane do

o main chalta hoon
mujhe jaane do
laa laa laa la la la la laa

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 18
——————————————————————————

One of the movies eligible for ‘Blog ten-year challenge’ today on 14.04.2020 is ‘Zindagi-1964’. The other movie is ‘Sardaar-1955’.

As many as five songs were posted on this dayn ten years ago (14.04.2010) on the blog as per details given below;

Song Movie title-Year Remarks
Muskuraa laadle muskuraa Zindagi-1964 08 of 12 songs posted
Muqaddar aajmaanaa chaahtaa hoon Door Ki Aawaaz-1964 All songs covered
Barkha ki raat mein he ho haa Sardaar-1955 06 of 09 songs posted
Dil e naadaan tujhe huaa kya hai Mirza Ghalib-1954 All songs covered
Hain sabse madhur wo geet Patita-1953 All songs covered

I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Zindagi-1964’. I had watched this movie during my stay at Parli-Vaijnath from 1985 to 1988.

So far, the following songs from “Zindagi-1964” have been posted on the blog;

Song Posted On
Ham pyaar ka saudaa karte hai ik baar 29.05.2009
Muskuraa laadle muskuraa 14.04.2010
Pehle miley thhey sapnon mein 31.07.2011
Hamne Jafaa na seekhi 06.02.2012
Ghungharwaa moraa chham chham baaje 24.02.2012
Ham dil ka kanwal denge jisko 28.09.2015
Ek naye mehmaan ke aane ki khabar hai 30.08.2019

I always associate this movie name with the song ‘Hamne jafaa na seekhi’. Other songs which are familiar to me are ‘ghunghrwaa moraa chham chham baaje’ (because of Mehmood) and ‘pehle miley thhey sapnon mein’. I had forgotten the other songs of this movie.

So, when I saw this movie still pending for ‘Yippeeee’ and due for ‘Blog ten-year challenge’ I checked its pending songs in HFGK and come across the today’s song which appeared to me as ‘new’ since it is not heard frequently. It is not a full song but can be called as a ‘longer snippet’ ( 🙂 ).

This is duet song sung by Mohd Rafi and Asha Bhonsle and written by Hasrat Jaipuri.

HFGK mentioned a ‘special note’ that Hasrat Jaipuri himself had confirmed about his penning this song.

This movie had total twelve songs (including one two-part song, which is already covered on the blog).

Music is composed by Shankar-Jaikishan.

Today’s song is picturized on Rajendra Kumar and Vaijayantimala.

Let us now enjoy today’s song ….

Lyrics

Devnagri Script lyrics (Provided by Avinash Scrapwala)
—————————————————

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 25
—————————————————————————

Today is 1 may 2020, viz the first day of the fifth month of the year 2020.

When I look back on this day ten years ago, I find that three songs were covered that day (1 may 2010). These songs were :-

Song Movie title-Year Remarks
Uff ye Jawaani ye adaa Mehmaan-1974 03 of 06 songs posted
Tumhaari mast nazar gar idhar nahin hoti Dil Hi To Hai-1963 All songs covered
Pyaar to ik din honaa thaa Ek Shrimaan Ek Shrimati-1969 05 songs posted

So it means that two movies are eligible for “Blog Ten year challenge” today.

One of these two movies is “Mehmaan”(1974).

This movie had six songs in it. Three of these songs have been covered in the blog. The movie made its debut ibn the blog this day ten years ago !

Here are the three songs of “Mehmaan”(1974) that have been covered so far:-

Song Posted On
Uff ye Jawaani ye adaa 01.05.2010
Meri chaahat rahegi hameshaa jawaan 26.04.2012
Ram Raheem Krishn Kareem … 25.10.2017

I may have discussed three songs from the movie, but these songs were spaced several years apart. Second song from the movie was discussed in 2012 and the third in 2017.

So, despite covering three songs from the movie, I do not remember anything about this movie. So when I watched the song under discussion today, I had some great and inadvertent fun watching the picturisation. I could see a very young Rekha lip syncing in Asha Bhonsle’s voice, but who was the gentleman, jumping up and down. He appeared somewhat familiar ! And then it hit me, Arrey, it was Vishwajeet ! He was well past his prime by 1974, but he was still trying to turrn the clock back rather valiantly. 🙂

The song starts being a motor boat song. Then the duo shift to a park, where the song becomes a classic running around the trees song- as I S Johar would have described it. 🙂

Then the duo jump over on a jeep. REnd of the song finds Rekha alighting from the jeep and walking off in a huff, determined not to go back to the jeep. But she quickly has a change of heart when she finds monkeys ahead. 🙂

Lyrics are by Sahir Ludhianvi. Normally known for penning songs espousing the caause of social justice, communal harmony, women emancipation and other such noble causes, here he is called upon to pen a raather more mundane kind of a song- viz a romantic song. And the lyrics are quite cute. “Chhoona mat mujhe”- is the warning issued by the lady. “royegi jo chhoone waala koi na mila”- is the response. Then she relents and sets the terms that she is agreeable to this “chhoona” business provided it is carried out gently. 🙂

Quite an interesting and fun song, even if much of the fun is inadvertent. This is a song from nearly five decades ago. I have been watching this song and listening to it for the first time in true tubelight fashion. I got to watch this song only because the lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.

During the course of my exercise to pick up Hindi songs in Bangla films, I have gone through many Bangla films with their basic details such as the director, story writer, star cast, lyricist, music director, playback singers etc. In the list of lyricists in any Bangla film, if I find the name of the lyricist from Hindi films, I am almost certain that there would be at least one Hindi song in that Bangla film. In some cases, I found that though the name of the Hindi film lyricist was not mentioned, still one or two Hindi songs were found in such Bangla films.

During one of such exercise, I got to know of a Bangla film ‘Sorry Madam’ (1962). The film was directed by Dilip Bose. Although, I could not find the name of Hindi lyricist for the film, the names of playback singers like Manna Dey, Mukesh, and Asha Bhosle gave me a glimmer of hope that there could be at least one Hindi song in the film. The music director for the Bangla film was Ved Pal. But I scored a blank on this count. However, during the searching the songs on the internet, I came across not one but three Hindi songs under the film’s title ‘Sorry Madam’ (Unreleased). Some further searches on the internet revealed a story behind this unreleased film which I was not aware of it. The film was to be a remake of Bangla film ‘Sorry Madam’ (1962) which was a box office success. Hindi remake with the same title was to be produced and directed by Dilip Bose who had also directed its Bangla version. But the film remained unfinished because the director, Dilip Bose went into deep depression after a personal tragedy.

Dilip Bose started his filmy career as actor in Bangla films ‘Kashinath’ (1943) and ‘Bichar’ (1943). I could not get any lead as to what he did during 1943-1960. In 1960, he directed his first Bangla film ‘Dui Bechaara’ (1960). The next Bangla film which he directed was ‘Sorry Madam’ (1962) with Biswajeet and Sandhya Roy in lead roles. ‘Chaandi Ki Deewar’ (1964) was his first directorial venture in Hindi film. During his filmy career, he directed 5 Bangla films, 6 Hindi films and 10 Bhojpuri films. He also acted in about a dozen Bangla films which included Satyajit Ray’s ‘Charulata’ (1964). He also did some smaller roles in a few Bhojpuri films besides story and screen-play writing.

In 1979, after directing Hindi films like ‘Chaandi Ki Deewar’ (1964), ‘Sansaar’ (1971), ‘Thokar’ (1974), ‘Badnaam’ (1975) and ‘Sikka’ (1976), he decided to produce and direct the Hindi remake of his Bangla film ‘Sorry Madam’ (1962) with Raj Kiran and Kajal Kiran in the lead roles. Six songs, all rendered by Mohammed Rafi (some with Asha Bhosle) were recorded in December 1979 under the music direction of Chitragupt. However, Dilip Bose was struck with a personal tragedy when he suddenly lost his wife. Being a sentimental person, Dilip Bose was so much devastated by this tragedy that he went into deep depression for a long time and the film remained unfinished. After recovering from the depression, Dilip Bose concentrated mainly on directing Bhojpuri films. Dilip Bose died in 2002.

Even though 6 songs of the unfinished film ‘Sorry Madam’ (1979) were recorded in December 1979, no gramophone records or CDs were issued. So, they remained unavailable to the public. It was only after the death of the music director, Chitragupt in January 1991 that the tape containing the songs were discovered.  It was decided to release the song in an album. However, by that time, Hindi film music scene had changed and composition style of these six songs sounded old to the music companies who were not interested in releasing the songs. It was only after the success of ‘Veer Zara’ (2004) in which the old-style song composition of Madan Mohan became a hit that a fresh effort was made to release the songs. A music publishing company agreed to release the songs. The tape of the songs were sent to Belgium to digitally restore them to the highest sound quality. Thus,  the songs which were recorded in December 1979 had to wait for 30 years to get them released in an album ‘Teri Adaa’ in 2009.

I am presenting one of the six songs, “Dekho Ji Waado Karo Ke Door Kabhi Tum Na Rahoge” from the unfinished film ‘Sorry Madam’ (1979). The song is written by Kaafil Aazar which is set to music by Chitragupt.

[Acknowledgements:  Some of the information about the background history of the film with 6 unreleased songs are sourced from silkrd.files.wordpress.com and about Dilip Bose, from the book, ‘Cinema Bhojpuri’ by Avijit Ghosh.]

Blog Day:

4326 Post No. : 15617

As a school going student, I was kept in strict discipline which meant going from home to school and back. No watching of movies. Even talking about movies and reading movie magazines were taboo. That did not prevent me from clandestinely reading movie magazines and books lying around the home that was apparently alright for elders to read.

It was in 1978, when I went to college and was allowed freedom as befitting a college goer. And I misused this freedom with abandon. I started watching movies left and right bunking college, as if making up for the lost time.

It was during this movie watching spree that I watched many old movies during their re runs. It included not only movies like “Sholay”(1975),”Deewaar”(1975), “Mera Gaaon Merra Desh”(1971) etc etc but also movies from earlier decades.

The movie halls where I watched most of these movies had names like Sujata, Sandhya, Vasundhara etc. But not all movie halls had feminine names. There was an old movie hall called Ratan Talkies. Closeby there was another movie hall called Rupashree which reputedly was the first movie hall of Bihar (which was opened way back in 1930s). Then there was Welfare cinema hall. These three cinema halls were closer to my residence than others. The farthest cinema hall was a “properly” named movie hall called Plaza. It was the kind of name that one found in big places like New Delhi. 🙂

It was in one matinee show in 1978 in Ratan Talkies that I watched “Kaajal”(1965). I did not have much clue about the movie. I found the movie boring in the beginning when I saw tragedy queen Meena Kumari and tragedy Kumar Raj Kumar in the movie. But then the songs began to appear one after the other. With every song, the reaction (mine as well as that of others) was, arre, this song is from this movie ! All iconic songs !

Since I had started my movie watching spree just recently, many actors were “new” for me. I watched Raj Kumar for the first time in this movie. Then there were many others whom I did not recognise at that time and regarded them as lesser actors. When I look back at the cast now, I realise that this movie had a galaxy of big names. The fact that it had Padmini, Mumtaz, Mehmood etc in it apart from the tragedy persons was lost on me. Then yesteryear legend Durga Khote was there too. Dharmendra was there whom I thankfully recognised, having seen him in a few movies earlier.

The movie had eleven songs in it. Nine of these songs have been covered in the past. When I look at the writeups of these songs, I realise that the writeups do not do justice to the songs. So I think we need to add some more contents and spice to these writeups. So I request our regulars to contribute their observations on these iconic songs.

Following songs from “Kaajal”(1965) have been covered in the blog so far.

Here is the tenth song from “Kaajal”(1965) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ravi.

This song is picturised as a “bhang” song on Mehmood and Mumtaz. Before I watched this song, I was not even aware that these two were in this movie.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.

Lyrics(Provided by Avinash Scrapwala)

zaraa si aur pila do bhang

O hai ham bhola
zaraa si aur pila do bhang
main aaya dekh ke aisa rang
ke dil mera dola aa
O hai ham bhola aa
meri to akal huyi hai dang
ye kaisa badlaa tera dhang
ke tu tha bhola

o hai ham bhola aa
b b b b b drurrrrrr ha

mujhe samajh na tu bairaagi
maine aaj tapasya tyaagi ee
hmm hmm hmm hmm
aehe aehe
mujhe samajh na tu bairaagi
maine aaj tapasya tyaagi
tere roop ka jhatka khaa ke
meri soyi jawaani jaagi ee
meri soyi jawaani jaagi
ja hat jaa arey malang
kare kyun beech sabhi ke tang
ke tu tha bhola

o hai ham bhola aa
zaraa si aur pila do bhang
main aaya dekh ke aisa rang
ke dil mera dola
O hai ham bhola

(undeciphered words)
Tak dhum tak tak tak tum

Kyun thhaam ke dil ko tehle
Jo chot lagi hai sah le ae
Haay haay
Kyun thhaam ke dil ko tehle
Jo chot lagi hai sah le ae
Us baat pe ab zid kaisi
Jo baat na maani pehle
Jo baat na maani pehle

Kyun jhagde mere sang
Main tujhse haar chukaa hoon jung
Ke dil mera dola
o hai ham bhola aa
meri to akal huyi hai dang
ye kaisa badlaa tera dhang
ke tu tha bhola

o hai ham bhola aa

(undeciphered words)

mere dil se nikle haaye
gori kyun nakhre dikhlaaye

(undeciphered words)

mere dil se nikle haaye
gori kyun nakhre dikhlaaye
zaraa hans ke gale se lag jaa
tujhe kunwaara pyaar bulaaye
tujhe kunwaara pyaar bulaaye
tere man pe chadh gaya jang
yoonhi ab kyun chamkaaye rang
ke tu tha bhola

o hai ham bhola aa
zaraa si aur pila do bhang
main aaya dekh ke aisa rang
ke dil mera dola aa
O hai ham bhola

Hullo Atuldom

Today I did a tiny research with the resources available at my disposal. I have inferred that the music duo Kalyanji Anandji have scored music for most of the movies where Feroz Khan was in the lead; till the time of Kalyanji’s passing in 2000. In fact, I found two Feroz Khan starring movies, on our blog, that are on the threshold of being yippeee’d. One has two songs left, but the album of that movie shows that Kalyanji-Anandji have given music for three sequences where there is no song. I am sure one music piece has Helen burning the dance floor, that is as brilliant as is the theme music for that movie. So for today we leave that movie alone and concentrate on the one that is one short of yippeee-hood.

That film is ‘Shankar Shambhu’ (1976). The four out of possible five songs from that move were posted thus:-

No. Song Title Post No. Post Date
1 Hum Lootne Aaye Hain Hum Loot Ke Jaayenge 11964 1-Apr-16
2 Aa Pahunchi Hai Is Mele Mein Saddi Aaj Sawaari 12492 25-Oct-16
3 Mera Dil Chura Kar Na Aankhen Churaa 15075 17-Jun-19
4 Gar Nibhaane Ki Himmat Na Thhi Aap Mein 15565 27-Apr-20

The final song of the movie is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Mohammad Rafi. It has Feroz Khan romancing Sulakshana Pandit in various locations. If my memory is right the couple have just got wet because they jump out of the boat on which they were having a joy ride in a lake to escape from constables led by Bhagwan Dada.

I don’t know what is there left to write about the music duo that the readers of this blog don’t know. So without much ado let us get to the song and thank Kalyanji Virji Shah (who would have been 92 today) and his brother Anandji Virji Shah for the treasure trove of songs that they have left for us to relish. And on the blog we have 583 from a possible 1435 songs i.e. not even halfway done.

With this post now, ‘Shankar Shambhu’ has all its songs on the blog.

Song – Bheege Huye Jalwon Par Aise Na Nazar Daalo  (Shankar Shambhu) (1976) Singer – Asha Bhosle, Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – Sahir Ludhianvi, MD – Kalynji Anand ji
Asha Bhosle + Mohammed Rafi

Lyrics

bheege huye jalwon par
aise na nazar daalo
bheege huye jalwon par
aise na nazar daalo
bheege huye jalwon par
aise na nazar daalo
dil chaahe idhar rakho
par aankh udhar daalo
bheege hue jalwon par

in garam nigaahon se
jazbaat bhadakte hain
in garam nigaahon se
jazbaat bhadakte hain
ehsaas sulagta hai
armaan dhadkate hai
ruk jaao
ruk jaao
ruk jaao abhi dil par
itna na asar dalo
bheege huye jalwon par
aise na nazar daalo
bheege huye jalwon par

soyi hui dhadkan ko
khud tumne jagaaya hai
soyi hui dhadkan ko
khud tumne jagaaya hai
saanso se pukaara hai
nazaron se bulaaya hai
mat apni khataon ko
mat apni khataon ko
ab aur ke sar daalo
oooo
bheege huye jalwon par
aise na nazar daalo
bheege huye jalwon par

kab hamne kaha tumse
hum tum pe nahin marte
kab hamne kaha tumse
hum tum pe nahin marte
tum kuch bhi kaho tum par
ilzam nahi dharte
bereham ho
bereham ho
bereham ho qaatil ho
ye qatl bhi kar daalo
hmmm mm hmm
hmmm mm hmm
dil chaahe idhar rakho
par aankh udhar daalo

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 42
——————————————————————————

From the three movies eligible for the ‘blog ten-year’ challenge today, we have already represented one today in the morning and taking this another one to add to the celebrations for today. This song is from the 1964 movie ‘Phoolon Ki Sej’ and it is sung by Mohd Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. This song is picturised on Mehmood and Shubha Khote, where the two lovers are singing and enjoying in their ‘famous’ style 😊

As mentioned in the earlier post total four songs were represented on the blog on 19.07.2010 including a song from this movie ‘Phoolon Ki Sej’ (1964).

Song  Movie title-Year  Remarks
Aaj Hamen Ban Behad Bhaata  Amar Jyoti (1936)  06 songs posted
Sataayega Kise Tu Aasmaan Jab Hum Nahin Honge  Sheesham (1952)  07 songs posted
Main Rickshaw Waala  Chhoti Behen (1959)  All songs covered
Aayegaa Koi Hamraaz Mere Pyaar Ka  Phoolon Ki Sej (1964)  05 songs posted

Two of the above listed films, i.e. ‘Amar Jyoti’ (1936) and ‘Phoolon Ki Sejh’ had made their debut on the blog that day.

‘Phoolon Ki Sej’ has total nine songs (including one three-part song) which are all written by Hasrat Jaipuri. Music for this movie is composed by Aadi Narayan Rao. Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Mohd Rafi, Mukesh and Manna Dey had given their voices to the songs in this movie. So far, the following songs from ‘Phoolon Ki Sej’ have been posted on the blog;

Song  Posted On
Aayegaa Koi Hamraaz Mere Pyaar Ka  19.07.2010
Aa Tu Aa Zara Dil Mein Aa  06.07.2012
Taaron Ki Aankhon Ka Taraa Tu  07.04.2013
 Aa Bhi Ja Rasiya  09.06.2014
Jaane Mujhe Kya Ho Gaya  14.08.2017

Seven songs of this film have already been covered on the blog, including the multiple version song ‘Taaron Ki Aankhon Ka Taara Tu’. So now, song are now left to be covered. One song being posted today will leave this movie only one short of ‘Yippeeee Land’ 😊

When I checked the earlier song posts of this movie, I noted that one song from this movie Aa Bhi Ja Rasiya was covered by our respected late Bharatbhai under his ‘Raag Maalikaa’ series (this was song number 12 in that series).

On this day today when our blog is celebrating 12th birth anniversary I take this opportunity to remember and pay our tributes to Bharatbhai who is not with us this year to celebrate this occasion. We all miss him today.

But I am sure wherever he is, he is enjoying this ‘musical journey’ and showering his blessings to this blog and on all ‘Atulites’ today.

Lyrics for the today’s song were sent by Prakashchandra.

Let us now enjoy the today’s song …

arre ye duniyaa kya jaane

bade hi mastaane ae
tumhaare deewaane ae
